Buying from Japan (P2)
I. Pre-reading
Discuss the following questions with your partner.
According to the Beijing Morning Post, during the past Spring Festival, 450,000 Chinese tourists visited Japan, spending nearly 6 billion yuan there buying daily necessities such as rice, rice cookers, and smart toilet seats.
 What do you think of this phenomenon?
 Is it worthwhile to make the effort to travel abroad to buy things that are also available at home?

II. Reading
Read the article and answer the following questions.
1. Why did Chinese people go all the way to Japan to buy things that are also available at home, according to the article?
1) Apparently, quality matters. “Japanese products have a human touch and intelligent design, while many technological achievements in China have not been used to serve its people,” said deputy Jiang Wanqiu at this year’s two meetings. The same products sold in China and abroad can also differ in quality. Many people have found that most of the products they have bought in Japan were actually “Made in China”, but their quality is much better than those sold in China.
2) Lower prices are also driving Chinese consumers abroad. High customs duties, sales taxes and different pricing strategies set by foreign companies are all increasing the prices in China.

2. What is Premier Li Keqiang’s attitude toward the large amount of overseas spending?
He pointed out at this year’s two meetings that customers are entitled to more choice and asked Chinese entrepreneurs to have an open mind. He also encouraged Chinese companies to upgrade their products to be more competitive with their overseas counterparts. “At least we can save the air fare for our customers,” Li said.

III. Language study
Study the following sentences:
1. Apparently, quality matters.

2. Japanese products have a human touch and intelligent design, while many technological achievements in China have not been used to serve its people …

Useful expression:
质量不同 differ in quality

以外国的标准制造   be made under foreign standards
有权享有更多的选择 are entitled to more choice

4. Which of the following words best describes Tim Cook’s attitude toward the Apple Watch?
A. Proud.   B. Modest.
C. Serious.  D. Cautious.

Key:
文中没有提到苹果手机能帮你诊断自己的疾病,所以A不对;根据倒数第三段的“you can send a real-time display of your heartbeat to another Apple Watch”可知B也不对;D的“for your neighbor”跟文中不符,所以也可以排除。
3. D。根据第七段的“the watch taps you on the wrist to draw your attention to a message or a calendar reminder”可得此答案。
4. A。根据Cook的“our most personal device yet; a new chapter in the way we relate to technology”这些评论,可以看出他对这段产品十分推崇和骄傲。

III. After reading
Further thinking:
Which function of Apple’s newly-released smartwatch is most attractive to you? Why do you think so?

 What are the differences between an optimist and a pessimist?
 Are you an optimist or a pessimist?
 Do you think being an optimist or a pessimist makes a difference to your success?

II. Reading
Read the article again and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
1. What do we learn from the two girls’ reaction in Paragraph 5?
A. Lael decided to give up on their plan because of her mother’s objection.
B. Lael was used to her mother’s attitude toward new things.
C. Sophia was too frightened to move around due to the warning.
D. Sophia was calm because she was used to this kind of warning.

2. What made the author believe the market plan “would never work”?
a. It was not easy to get a stall at the market.
b. Local people didn’t like eating desserts for breakfast.
c. The weather was bad and it was rainy and cold.
d. She didn’t think the cookies they baked tasted good.
e. They came back one and a half hours after they left.
A. a, b, c  B. b, c, d
C. a, c, e   D. b, d, e

3. Why did the author think her husband was “smiling dangerously”?
A. She guessed that he might have been thinking about his agreement with her dad.
B. She thought he was overexcited about their successful day at the market.
C. She realized a bigger plan might be coming.
D. She guessed that he was probably thinking that she was an optimist.

4. From the story, we can infer that _____ is probably a pessimist.
A. the author
B. the author’s niece
C. the author’s brother
D. the author’s daughter

Key:
1. B。 Lael nodded patiently at me. Sophia stared blankly. It seems she had never heard such a warning. She was the daughter of an optimist.
2. C。从文中You can't just show up at the market and get a stall. Not many people buy desserts first thing in the morning. And it's forecast to rain.
There was something wrong with his voice. And he was smiling dangerously.

III. After reading
Further thinking:
 What did you learn from this story?
 What would you do if you knew a person like the author who kept discouraging you when you wanted to do something unusual or different?
