Back to tradition (P2)
I. Pre-reading
Discuss the following questions with your partner.
During this year’s “two sessions”, CPPCC member and well-known director Feng Xiaogang suggested the return of 50-200 traditional Chinese characters to schools to promote Chinese traditional culture. Do you think it is necessary to promote traditional Chinese characters at school? Why or why not?

II. Reading
Read the article and answer the following questions.
1. When did traditional Chinese characters first appear?
Traditional Chinese characters appeared in the Han Dynasty, and have been stable since the fifth century.

2. When and why did the Chinese government introduce simplified characters?
The Chinese government introduced simplified characters in the 1950s in an attempt to increase literacy.

3. Why did Feng Xiaogang propose the return of 50-200 traditional Chinese characters to schools?
Feng thinks the proposal “is not restoring the traditional writing system and discarding the simplified system, but letting the children know about the most important part of traditional Chinese culture”.

4. What does Lu Bo think of the proposal to bring back traditional Chinese characters?
He thinks learning traditional Chinese would not only help promote Chinese traditional culture but also help people better understand Chinese historical records and classic works because for two thousand years, they were all written in traditional characters. He also believes it would contribute to national reunification, since traditional characters are still in use in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and many Chinese communities around the world.

5. Why are many people against the reintroduction of traditional Chinese characters at school?
They think it is not necessary to do since simplified characters are easier to learn and write, and many people have already gotten used to them.

III. Language study

Many of our medicines originate from plants.
(promote)
They have begun dialogues to promote better understanding between the two communities.

Female first in computer science (P3)
I. Pre-reading
Discuss the following questions with your partner.
There are currently fewer women than men working in the field of computer science. What do you think are the reasons for this phenomenon?

II. Reading
Read the article and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
1. Which of the following is TRUE about the Student Cluster Competition?
A. It is a two-day national computing event.
B. It used to reject all female players.
C. It was open only to college students until 2014.
D. The first female high school student ever to compete in the competition did so last November.
2. During the competition, Ribordy and her teammates ____.
A. competed on six computers
B. designed a new kind of LED strip
C. put together hardware to complete the task
D. built a device to make the computers’ power stable
3. Which of the following does Ribordy think may be the reason few women work in computer science?
A. People’s prejudice against females working in this area.
B. Females’ lack of confidence in the field of computer science.
C. Young girls having little access to computer science.
D. The shortage of experienced female computing teachers.
4. Which of the following words best describe Ribordy as she is shown in the article?
A. Devoted and modest.
B. Creative and humorous.
C. Brilliant and ambitious.
D. Patient and flexible.

Key:
1. D。根据第三段的“she is the only female high school student to ever compete in the two-day event”可以得此答案。根据第二段的“It is a computing event that brings together students from all over the world”可知A有误。
2. C。根据第四段的“They put together advanced hardware to …”

III. After reading
Further thinking:
What do you think should be done to help more females succeed in the field of science?

Do women’s work (P6)
I. Skimming

1. How did the author start her career?
She started her career as the first female photojournalist in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.

2. Why did the author feel unwelcome when she worked as a photographer in Gaza?

She started paying closer attention to women’s lives in Gaza. Because she is a woman, she could go where her colleagues were forbidden to go.

4. What lesson did the author learn from her experience in Gaza?
As a Palestinian female photographer, the journey of struggle, survival and everyday life has inspired her to overcome the community taboo and see a different side of war and its aftermath.

D. let the reader know how the war influenced her life
4. From the story, it can be inferred that _____.
A. the author wouldn’t like to reveal the cruel side of war
B. the author eventually had to leave Gaza because of the community taboo
C. the author decided to document more unseen scenes from the war
D. the author was determined to run away from the explosions in the end

Key:
1. B。 My work as a woman photographer was considered a serious insult (侮辱) to local traditions…They made clear that a woman must not do a man’s job.
2. A。从第5段第1句…an Israeli air raid (袭击) destroyed the compound and broke my nose可知,这波空袭让作者的鼻子受了伤。
3. C。 I started paying closer attention to women’s lives in Gaza. Because I am a woman, I could go where my colleagues were forbidden to go.
My work is not meant to hide the scars of war, but to show the full unseen stories of Gazans.并且声明自己将克服一切困难及禁忌要see a different side of war and its aftermath,所以作者的态度是很鲜明的:毅然将自己的职责坚持到底。
