Task 1. Skimming
Read the passage quickly and find the main idea of the passage.
Ordering is a fun game of trial and error, and the adventure begins before the food is even served in China.
Task 2. Scanning
Read the passage and decide if these sentences are true or false.
1.The author thinks it very difficult to order food in every country but China.
2.The pictures attached to the menu make ordering food more entertaining.
3.The author and her friend ordered food with curious names to learn about Chinese traditions.
4.They found that “lion head” was diced chicken with green pepper.
5.The author had no choice but to order one bowl of “crossing over the bridge noodles” because she knew nothing about the other food in the restaurant.
6.The author liked the noodles very much because of the pork in them.
7.The author was afraid to eat in a Chinese restaurant because the experience left her disappointed and nervous.
III. Listen and fill the blanks
At home, ordering food from a menu is a ____, everyday routine. In China, ordering is a fun game of trial and error, and the _______    begins before the food is even served! Many restaurants in central Beijing advertise “English language menus”, but the ________can just add to the confusion. Although accompanying pictures can be of help, the translations often make the whole experience even more_______. We learned that “lion head” was actually pork, and “students _____ to chicken gristle” was diced chicken with green pepper.
Recently, I came across a busy restaurant in a Beijing hutong. It was lunchtime and the small room was filled with people . 1. add to  增加

eg: Jack became addicted to drugs at quite an early age.
3.people sitting on small stools slurping noodles.
sitting on small stools 在句中做定语修饰people,可以换成who sat,slurping noodles在句中伴随状语。
eg, 1) People traveling in the country were forced to go back due to the earthquake .
2) He sat at the table reading China Daily.
4. …had no idea what it would taste like
此句含有what 引导的同位语从句,从句解释idea 的内容。eg, News came through that house prices had gone down.

Experts have said at different times that it was a temple, a calendar, or a graveyard.

In ancient times, spiritual ceremonies didn’t happen on the ground. In this way, they could get closer to the heavens. So the rituals at Stonehenge were performed not among the stones, but on top of them.
3. How did Spalding support his theory?
He listed examples from ancient civilizations worldwide. He also said the wood that would have been used for the platform had long since rotted away, leaving only the stone pillars that supported it behind.
4. What are other scholars’ attitude towards this new theory?
They have a fair degree of skepticism about the theory, saying there are a large number of stone circles around the country which didn’t have a platform on top.

that 在此句中引导定语从句,修饰先行词treatment,从句中缺主语故that不能省。
Eg. The dog that lives across the road bit my brother last year.

so 后省略了that , so that 在此引导目的状语从句。
Eg. He got up early so that he would be able to catch the early bus.
