Fish and chips known as best-loved British dish (P4-5)
I. Pre-reading
Discuss the following questions with your partner.
 Do you know what the most popular food in the UK is?
It is the dish of fish and chips.
 What is in the dish? Why is it so popular in the UK?

II. Reading
Read the article and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
1. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To teach readers how to make fish and chips.
B. To explain why Britons love fish and chips so much.
C. To share the author’s childhood memories of fish and chips.
D. To report on a new study on the effects of climate change on fish and chips in the UK.

2. Which of the following is TRUE about fish and chips according to the article?
A. It is a popular take-away food that is usually wrapped in paper.
B. It consists of lightly-fried fish in batter and lightly-fried chipped potatoes.
C. Most British people prefer to make it at home rather than buy it from shops.
D. It is becoming less popular in the UK than it used to be because of climate change.

3. What can we conclude from Paragraph 5?
A. Fish and chips is mainly a dish for busy people in Britain.
B. Many Britons love to eat fish and chips when they are depressed.
C. For many Britons, there is more to fish and chips than flavor.
D. In Britain, fish and chips is a traditional dish for an indoor family gathering.

4. What can we learn from the article?
A. It was part of the author’s family’s routine to eat fish and chips on Friday nights.
B. Not many people shared the author’s family’s habit of eating fish and chips on the weekend.
C. When the author was young, his parents would treat him to fish and chips when he did something good.
D. Since the fish and chip shop was far away from the author’s home, his parents usually made it themselves.

Key:
2. A。由第四段“It’s a “take away” dish. You buy the fish and chips, wrapped in paper so they stay warm…” B项的lightly-fried应该是deep-fried;由第四段的“but more often the British buy them from a fish and chip shop”可知C不对;从第二段提到海水升温可能会威胁到鱼类的生存,但这并不意味着fish and chips在英国的欢迎度降低,所以D不对。
3. C。由第五段“Fish and chips are warmly symbolic in the UK. For example, in the minds of many, they’re associated with holidays.”
4. A。由最后一段“When I was a child, fish and chips was a meal eaten on Friday evenings.”

III. Language study
1. Nowhere is the dish of fish and chips more loved than in the UK.

2. No wonder that a heated discussion began when a new study came out on April 13 suggesting the dramatic warming of sea waters due to climate change could threaten the fish used in the classic dish.
No wonder 难怪。 No wonder that a heated discussion began。 用作后置定语,修饰a new study, 而suggesting后又接了一个省略了引导词that的宾语从句,该从句的主干为:the dramatic warming of sea waters … could threaten the fish used in the classic dish。

3. There can’t be many people in Britain who don’t remember how a rainy day in a seaside town was cheered up with fish and chips.
There are probably many people in Britain who remember …。

Happy birthday Hubble (P5)
I. Pre-reading
Discuss the following questions with your partner.
Have you ever heard of the Hubble Space Telescope? What are the functions of the telescope?

II. Reading
Read the article and answer the following questions.
1. How old is the Hubble Space Telescope?
It turned 25 on April 25.

2.  What has been discovered thanks to the Hubble Space Telescope?
Astronomers 20 years ago said the universe was 10 billion to 20 billion years old, but thanks to the Hubble and other telescopes, we can now say it’s 13.8 billion years old. In addition, the Hubble was used to study supernovas in distant galaxies and played a key role in 1998’s amazing discovery that the expansion of the universe is accelerating thanks to “dark energy”.
Before Hubble, we didn’t know how many galaxies there are in the universe. It was thought that there were tens of billions of galaxies, but now, thanks to the Hubble, scientists can say there are roughly 200 billion.

Read the article and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
1. The underlined phrase “getting on” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ____.
A. getting older  B. getting upgraded
C. getting more popular D. going out of service

2. Why is the Hubble Space Telescope so popular?
a. It has the best camera in the world.
b. It has cute designs that kids love.
c. It has captured beautiful images of space.
d. It has helped with some great discoveries.
e. What it has captured in space has been beyond people’s expectations.
A. acd       B. cde C. acde       D. abcd

3. When the Hubble stops working, it may ____.
A. be “parked” where it is
B. be brought back to Earth
C. be blown up and turned into space junk
D. change the way we think about the universe

Key:
3. B。根据最后一段的“may be brought back to Earth or parked in a higher orbit as space junk when it stops working”可以得此答案。

Our graduate kids (P6)
I. Pre-reading
Discuss the following questions with your partner.
 Graduation is just around the corner. How do you feel about it?
 Are there any special ceremonies for graduation at your school? If so, what are they? What happens?

II. Reading
Read the article and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
1. What does the word “stress” in Paragraph 4 actually refer to?
A. The stress of the approaching prom and graduation.
B. The stress of having been infected with shingles.
C. The stress of selecting a good college.
D. The stress of getting along with each other.

2. After reading Pete’s writing, the author ____.
A. felt sorry that he hadn’t written such words to his daughter
B. was moved and started to feel deep love for his daughter as well
C. felt even prouder of what his daughter had achieved in the past years
D. felt determined to go to the graduation because he was guilty

3. With this story, the author intends to show ____.
A. his memories of the days when he got along with his daughter
B. how he and his wife prepared for his daughter’s Graduation Night
C. his mixed feelings about his daughter’s graduation
D. how he helped solve the conflicts between his wife and daughter

Key:
1. A。根据“She and The Graduate have been yelling at each other since senior prom.”
I read that, and suddenly fatherhood had me by the throat. Can we get on with this graduation? Before I just melt.

III. Language study
1. Just remember: What doesn’t kill you just makes you funnier.
What doesn’t kill you just makes you rounder,这两句在句式上与一句谚语如出一辙,都是仿拟而来,原句是:What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.(那些不能摧毁你的东西,都将使你更强大)。

2. I don’t know what the little girl did, but from the look in Posh’s eyes, I’m pretty sure she killed someone.
I will stay beside you until the sky falls and the sea runs dry.
