Pale or tanned: Is there a true color of beauty? P(4)

I. Warm up

What is beauty to you?

II. Fast reading

Reading the passage and choose one answer to fill in the blanks.

ONE question that’s always followed humans is “What is beauty?” Beliefs have changed over time and depends largely on what culture we’re born into.

One of the easiest ways to measure beauty is with the eyes – physical beauty. And here lies the interesting differences today between the East and West.    1    In East Asia, the centuries-old sign of beauty is having light skin, which once represented  your wealth and class. It said that you had the money to keep out of the hot sun.

2    But it hasn’t always been this way. Before the 20th century, being tanned was associatedwith lower classes, as they were more likely to laboroutside.    3    For example  sunlight is a source of vitamin D, which is good for your bones, and protects against some diseases. Tanned skin became a sign of health, as well as class – you had the time to relax in the sun.    4    Using special lights, they give the user an artificial tan, but can be dangerous to use.

So when thinking about the question of beauty, it’s important to remember that one answer isn’t enough.   5

A. There are many cultural answers.

B. Then in the early 1900s, benefits of sunlight were found.

C. In these parts of the world, the skin color is used as a measure.

D. Yet in Western culture, the opposite is a measure of beauty: having tanned skin.

E. Today, there are popular creams to make you look tanned, and many people use sunbeds.
