Revolutionary artist (P1)
I. Pre-reading
Discuss the following questions with your partner.
 Are you interested in art?
 If so, who is your favorite artist?
 Why do you like him or her?
 What are the key features of his or her works?

II. Reading
Read the article and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
1. What is the article mainly about?
A. Why Picasso’s paintings have a lasting appeal.
B. What inspired Picasso to develop into a great artist.
C. Picasso’s great, revolutionary achievements in art.
D. The background of the birth of analytic cubism.
2. John Berger compared Picasso to King Midas because he thought that ____.
A. Picasso could turn everything into gold
B. Picasso painted everything very well
C. Picasso had magic powers like King Midas
D. Picasso’s paintings were closely related to Greek mythology
3. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the painting revolution started by Picasso and Georges Braque?
A. They tried to make their paintings look like windows.
B. They painted like there was depth in their paintings.
C. They showed the different angles of an object in their paintings.
D. They painted violins that they had broken into pieces.
4. Picasso and Georges Braque started analytic cubism because _____.
A. they believed art needed to change to follow the changing world
B. they wanted to apply Einstein’s theory of relativity to painting
C. new political movements had forced art to change
D. Picasso wanted to make waves like Einstein
5. The painting Guernica is mentioned in the third-to-last paragraph to show _____.
A. the main themes of Picasso’s paintings
B. the philosophy behind Picasso’s paintings
C. what Picasso had learned during the cubist period
D. that Picasso’s analytical approach made it a masterpiece

Key:
2. B。第二段“…it seemed to Berger that Picasso could cast his magic on everything he painted.
In the past, an artist had made a painting like a window – they painted to make it look like there was depth.
4. A。第七段第一句提问“But why did they feel such a need to change things?”与本题问题相同,答案由后句“ Well, the world around them was changing.”
5. D。倒数第二段“Picasso could not have painted it without the skills he had learned during the cubist period.”

III. Post-reading
 Surf the Internet to find out more about Picasso’s works and analytic cubism.

 Study the following sentences.
1. You could tell which objects were “close” to you and which objects were “far away”, as if the picture were a window you were looking through.

2. And it was not only science that was making waves.

3. Picasso could not have painted it without the skills he had learned during his cubist period.
Could not have done

Remains found in China (P5)
I. Pre-reading
Discuss the following questions with your partner.
 Do you know when and where the earliest modern humans lived?
 How do we know how ancient humans lived?

II. Reading
Read the article and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
1. Liu Wu considers the discovery in Daoxin county a milestone because ____.
A. it provides evidence that the earliest modern humans lived in East Asia
B. it shows that modern humans lived in southern China 30,000 to 70,000 years ago
C. it confirms that modern humans existed in the eastern Mediterranean and Europe earlier than in Asia
D. it indicates that modern humans began to migrate from southern China 40,000 to 60,000 years ago
2. According to past evidence, _____.
A. early modern humans from Africa started to colonize the world about 80,000 to 120,000 years ago
B. the earliest remains discovered in Africa lived about 45,000 years ago
C. remains from the Skhul and Qafzeh Caves in Israel were believed to be more than 120,000 years old
D. older traces of modern humans outside Africa came from unsuccessful wider migration
3. Which of the following ideas might Mike Petraglia agree with?
A. Modern humans migrated south through the eastern Mediterranean and Europe.
B. The new finding proves that the remains found in Israel didn’t mean unsuccessful wider migration.
C. The cold of the Ice Age in Europe may have helped the Neanderthals migrate between 24,000 and 130,000 years ago.
D. The Neanderthals lived in Europe during the same period that modern humans did.
4. The team is going to genetically analyze the teeth in order to make it clear _____.
A. why modern humans reached East Asia so long before they reached Europe
B. how early modern humans lived and why they migrated south
C. how ancient Homo sapiens and humans are genetically connected
D. what aspects Homo sapiens and the Neanderthals shared in common

Key:
1. A。Liu Wu认为这项发现是“milestone”出现在第四段中,后面他又说“This means that we were present in southern China 30,000 to 70,000 years earlier than in the eastern Mediterranean and Europe,” 出项在中国南部的现代人比地中海东部地区以及欧洲早3万到7万年。
C选项原句为“…remains from the Skhul and Qafzeh Caves in Israel that are roughly 100,000 years old…”,而不是超过12万年。
3. B。第六段中Mike Petraglia说“This demonstrates it was not unsuccessful wider migration”,其中“this”指“the new finding”,B选项正确。

 Find from the article what happened in the following time zones or what the numbers refer to.
1. 80,000 and 120,000 years ago
Homo sapiens, the species of modern humans, lived between 80,000 and 120,000 years ago.
2. 30,000 to 70,000 years
Modern humans were present in southern China 30,000 to 70,000 years earlier than in the eastern Mediterranean and Europe.
3. 40,000 to 60,000 years ago
Early modern humans from Africa are believed to have begun colonizing (殖民化) the world only around 40,000 to 60,000 years ago.
4. 100,000 years old
Remains from the Skhul and Qafzeh Caves in Israel are roughly 100,000 years old.
5. 45,000 years old
The earliest remains of modern humans discovered in Europe are about 45,000 years old.
6. 24,000 and 130,000 years ago
Neanderthals were closely related to modern humans and lived between 24,000 and 130,000 years ago.

III. Language study
Study the following sentences.
1. The discovery of 47 human teeth from Fuyan Cave in Daoxian county, Hunan province by Chinese scientists has unearthed evidence that the earliest modern humans lived in East Asia.
The discovery … has unearthed evidence。

2. Although older traces of modern humans have been seen outside Africa, such as remains from the Skhul and Qafzeh Caves in Israel that are roughly 100,000 years old, many researchers had argued that those only showed unsuccessful wider migration.
本句的主干为:many researchers had argued …。

Power of passion (P6)
I. Pre-reading
Discuss the following questions with your partner.
 What major are you planning to study in college?

1. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. She worked hard, even though she had poor results.
B. She was very dependent on her parents.
C. She liked to try different majors.
D. She had a quiet university life.
2. The author realized she needed to change her lifestyle when _____.
A. she failed her third major and felt depressed
B. she had the strange dream of making a movie for her family
C. she stopped living an expensive life and couldn’t manage
D. her parents lost their money and couldn’t support her education
3. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the author’s fourth major?
A. It was paid for through student loans and funding from the University.
B. It led her to film documentaries for Public Broadcasting Services.
C. She worked different jobs to earn the money for the tuition for it.
D. She was given a recommendation to study it at Colorado.
4. According to the text, the author now _____.
A. is still working multiple jobs
B. helps to build up the confidence of her employees
C. is in charge of a very important social media company
D. starts working on all aspects of filmmaking

Key:

III. Language study
Study the following sentences.
1. Reality set in and I realized it was now or never.
It was now or never – I had to move fast.  realize引导的宾语从句中的it指下文“与过去的生活方式说再见,并要有所作为”这件事。

2. From there, I became active in all aspects of filmmaking, from production to financing projects.
分析:词组in all aspects of意思是“在所有方面”,之后介绍具体某些方面可以用(ranging) from … to … 。例如:She can do well in all aspects of cooking.

Translate the following sentences with the given words or phrases.
(take advantage of)
I advise you to take full advantage of this opportunity to improve your oral English.

Winter is setting in, and the population is facing food and fuel shortages.
