Why we say mama and papa (P5)

I. Warming up  
1. Have you ever heard what foreigners call their mother and father?
2. Do you know why babies say “Mama” and “Papa” at an early age?
II. Skimming
Read the passage and answer the following questions.
1. What is the main idea of the passage?
The reason why the words for “Mama” and “Papa” around the world are similar.
2. What are the easiest sounds for a human to make?
The easiest sounds for a human to make are open-mouth vowel sounds. 
III. Scanning
Read the passage again and answer the following questions.
1. How did scientists use to explain why  “Mama” and “Papa” around the world are surprisingly similar?
They believed that the similarities might be because many languages started from one language called Proto-Indo-European. 
2. Why isn’t this explanation reasonable?
Because this does not explain why there are similarities outside of Europe. 
3. Why are open-mouth vowel sounds the easiest sounds for a human to make?
Because he or she can make them without doing anything with his or her tongue or lips.
4. How do babies finally say the words “Mama” and “Papa”?
After trying open-mouth vowel sounds, babies try to test some easier consonant sounds made with closed lips, or “labial sounds”, such as “m”, “p” and “b”. Then they make the new consonant sound “mmmm” and then relax into an open mouth vowel sound, usually “ah”.
IV. Sentence structure
Read the sentences and pay attention to their structures.
1. The further away from home you get, the more the languages around you change.
该句中“the more..., the more...” 表示 “越……就
越……”, 是复合句,其中前面的句子是状语从句,
后面的句子是主句。

This could be the reason why, around the world, a child’s first words are often related to “ma” or “pa”, leading parents to be called “mama” and “papa”.

V. Vocabulary
1. -- that those two warm words have survived tens of thousands years of human history to remain in use today.
remain: 保持”、“仍然是”,“依旧是”。是系动词:后接 “
形容词、名词、动词不定式、现在分词、过去分词或介词
短语”作表语,指某人或某事物仍保持某种状态。

Whatever you’ve achieved, you should remain modest.
Humans remained hunters for thousands of years.

Peter became a manager, but Jack remained in his last job.
2. It turned out that the easiest sounds for a human to make are open-mouth vowel sounds.
It turned out that -- 结果表明;结果是
E.g.
It turned out that the children were not to blame for the accident.
It turned out that the man was an excellent policeman working in New York.
3. A baby says “mama” and “papa” and it sounds as if he or she is talking to someone---
It sounds as if -- 听起来好像
E.g.

II. Skimming
Look through the passage and answer the following questions.
1. What happens to the boy?
He wets his pants in the classroom.
2. Who gets him out of trouble?
His classmate, Susie. 
III. Scanning
Read the passage again and answer the following questions
1. Does Susie trip and spill water in the boy’s lap by accident or on purpose? Why?
On purpose, because she wants to save the boy from trouble.
2. How does the boy feel after Susie spills the water in his lap?
The boy is in a state of relief .
3. Why do the other children stop Susie helping to clean the floor?
They think she has caused trouble for the boy. 
4. Why does Susie want to help the boy?
Because she once had the same problem as the boy.
IV. Sentence structure
Read the sentences and pay attention to their structures.
1. He looks up from his prayer, and here comes the teacher with a look in her eyes that says he has been discovered.
Here comes the teacher 为倒装句。表示地点的
here和 there位于句首时,其后用完全倒装形式。
Here comes the bus. 
There goes the bell. 
There goes the last train. 
但是,若主语为代词,则不倒装:
Here I am. 
Here it comes.
地点副词away, down, in, off, out, over, round, up 等位于句首时,其后也用完全倒装语序。
The door opened and in came Mr Smith.
Down came the rain and up went the umbrellas.
2. and here comes the teacher with a look in her eyes that says he has been discovered.
with a look in her eyes 为with复合结构:with + n. + 介词短语
eyes后面that引导的是定语从句,修饰eyes。
V. Vocabulary
1. THERE is a nine-year-old kid sitting at his desk and all of a sudden, there is a puddle (一滩水) between his feet and the front of his pants are wet.
Now all of a sudden, instead of being made fun of, the boy gets sympathy.
all of a sudden: suddenly
All of a sudden I heard a crash from the kitchen.  突然我听到厨房里传来一声巨响.
make fun of: 取笑
It's cruel to make fun of people who stammer.
嘲笑口吃的人未免不近人情。
2. But the ridicule that should have been his is given to someone else – Susie
should have done:用于指本该发生而实际上未发生的情况。
I should have left London before 9, but I didn’t. 我本该在9点以前离开伦敦,但是我没有。
VI. Discussion
In our daily lives, we often feel embarrassment. After reading this passage, what do you think you should we do if you find that someone else is in an embarrassing situation?
