Shooting like Katniss (P4)
I. Pre-reading
Discuss the following questions with your partner.
 Have you seen The Hunger Games movies?
 What are they about?
The movies center around Katniss Everdeen, a heroine who uses a bow and arrow to survive in fierce competitions.
 What are the rules of the “Hunger Games”?
Contestants are set loose in a controlled wilderness, where they must survive hunger and kill each other, until only one of them is left alive. The survivor brings home glory and food to his or her district, and everyone, rich and poor, watches the events on TV.

II. Reading
Read the article and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
1. The Hunger Games is mentioned at the beginning of the article in order to _____.
A. show the reader the personality of the movie’s heroine
B. analyze what has made the movie a hit
C. lead in to the subject of the popularity of archery
D. show what kind of sport archery is

2. The underlined word “demanding” in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to “_____”.
A. enjoyable  B. difficult  C. practical  D. beneficial

3. What can we conclude from the article about archery?
A. The author went to an archery club in Beijing because she is really into the sport.
B. Although she was tired, the author was quite satisfied with her performance in archery practice.
C. When shooting arrows, one has to stand with both shoulders facing the bull’s eye.
D. To do well in archery, it’s important for people to build their upper body strength.

Key:
It worked muscles in my back and arms that I simply didn’t have. My ill-fitting suit also reminded me why Amazon women in Greek mythology removed their right breasts before ever learning to string a bow. It must have saved them a lot of pain in the long run.”
3. D。根据第四段的“And I was warned that archery would require a great deal of upper body strength”以及倒数第三段的“It worked muscles in my back and arms that I simply didn’t have.” 根据第三段的“So my editor sent me on a mission: to find my inner Everdeen at one of Beijing’s indoor archery clubs.”可知作者并不是因为非常喜欢射箭而去练习射箭的,所以A不对;文中作者并没有提及对自己的表现是否满意,所以排除B;由第五段的“My colleague and I were told to stand sideways with one shoulder facing the bull’s eye.”

III. After reading
Answer the following questions:
1. Why did the author go to an archery club?
Now that the mania of The Hunger Games has led to more interest in archery, archery ranges have started to pop up in many major cities, including China’s. So her editor sent her on a mission: to find her inner Everdeen at one of Beijing’s indoor archery clubs.

2. What was the author told that archery would require?
She was told that archery would require a great deal of upper body strength.

3. How did the author perform in her archery practice?
Her first few arrows simply dropped onto the ground. After an hour of practice, she found herself leaving with a couple of bull’s eyes.

IV. Language study
1. The movies center around Katniss Everdeen …
Their talks always center around politics.

2. And I was warned that archery would require a great deal of upper body strength – a tall order for someone who hadn’t seen the inside of a gym in years.
Repairing the machine in half an hour is a tall order.

D. It could make it hard for people to distinguish between virtual reality and reality.

4. What is Google’s attitude toward the technology named “Cinematic Reality”?
A. Optimistic.  B. Negative.
C. Worried.  D. Unconcerned.

Key:
1. C。根据第二段的“But recently they have started to release more information, and it seems like the future of computing is about to change dramatically.” 由第二段的“keeping it so secret that even the people working on the project have been hidden from the media”可知A不对;由第四段的“The company hopes to create new technology that mixes reality and virtual reality computing.”可知B不对;由“The video shows a small elephant floating in the hands of its user, a virtual reality pet that the user can interact with.”
3. B。根据第五段的“Rio Caraeff, the company’s chief content officer, said that instead of staring at a phone screen, ‘the world becomes your screen’.”

III. Language study
This means that the way we interact with computers could change completely, and so could the gaming industry.
1) His father was a soldier and so was his grandfather.
2) I would never ever go to that restaurant again. The food was terrible!
 Neither would I.

Key:
