V. Language Study
1.They not only sort their garbage, but also put QR codes (二维码) on it.
这是一个由not only…but also引导的并列句。
表达的意思是“不但……而且……”
一、主要用于连接两个对等的成分;若连接两个成分作主语,其后谓语动词与靠近的主语保持一致 。
She likes not only music, but also sport.
The place was not only cold, but also damp.
The film was greatly enjoyed by not only the students, but also their teacher.
二、为了强调,可将not only置于句首,此时其后的句子通常要用部分倒装的形式。
Not only has she been late three times, but she has also done no work.
Not only do they need clothing, but they are also short of water.

2. On the streets, the bins are printed with images of items that are allowed inside, which makes recycling quite easy.
这是一个带两个定语从句的句子。
第一个是that引导的限定性定语从句;第二个是which引导的非限定性定语从句。
which指代整个主句 。例如:
He said that he had never seen her before, which was not true.
When deeply absorbed in work, which he often was, he would forget all about eating and sleeping.

V. Language Study
1.How can it be that some people don’t care about the many messages in their inboxes, yet some make sure to go through every single e-mail as soon as they get it?
句中的How can it be …“怎么可能…”。例如:How can it be so expensive? How can it be mastered within a few hours?
句中的yet 是conj. “但是,然而;而又” 。例如: He is old, yet he works hard. He worked hard, and yet he failed the exam.

2. For that reason, tidy people like me can’t help but check e-mails the moment they arrive.
句中can’t help but do“只能做某事”,“不得不做”。如:I can’t help but wait. Well, I can’t help but obey your orders.
注意:can’t help doing “情不自禁做某事”;can’t help do sth “无法帮助做某事”

She has spent a lot of time and effort on thinking differently, which has not been easy.

She takes pride in herself and feels normal when acknowledging her efforts.

VII. Usage tip
Despite a track record of success ...
Despite用作介词时,与 in spite of同义,表示“尽管”、“虽然”。
放在句首时,要接词或词组。
如:Despite his old age, he is learning to drive.
虽然年事已高,他现在在学驾驶汽车。
