Spain’s Shakespeare (P1)
I. Warming Up
Look at the following pictures. What can you see in them? Who are the characters?
They show the adventures of Don Quixote and his squire. They are characters from the book Don Quixote.

II. Pre-reading
What do you know about Don Quixote? Who was the author of the book?
Don Quixote, fully titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes.

Miguel de Cervantes:
Died: 22 April 1616 (aged 68) Madrid, Spain
Occupation: Soldier, novelist, poet, playwright, accountant
Nationality: Spanish

Don Quijote (Don Quixote) : Illustration by Gustave Doré, depicting the famous windmill scene.

III. While reading
1. Read the article and summarize its main idea.
It introduces the main characters of the novel Don Quixote and explores why the book is still appreciated today.
2. Read the article again and answer the following questions.
Why Don Quixote is still appreciated today?
It is a wonderfully truthful comedy. Its main character has great difficulty distinguishing reality from imagination, which is a common trait of human beings.
Why does Mr Alonso Quijano want to become a knight?
He reads far too many romances and they have affected his mind.
What does Alonso Quijano do to make himself a knight?
He gives himself the aristocratic name “Don Quixote de La Mancha” that suits a knight.
He finds himself an old horse called “Rocinante”.
He chooses Aldonza Lorenzo, a farmer’s daughter, to be his beloved.
He makes his servant Quixote’s squire.
What does “quixotic” mean in English?
It is used to describe someone who is idealistic but foolish in pursuit of his ideals.

IV. Post-reading
Discussion:
In your opinion, what makes a knight (骑士) and what is chivalry (骑士精神)?
In the Middle Ages, a knight was a man of high social rank who had a duty to fight for his king. Knights are often shown in pictures riding horses and wearing Armour (盔甲).
Chivalry:The term implies not only the knight, but also the duties of a good knight. These duties are defined as faithfulness and service to God, kindness to fellow Christians, protection of the weak and courtly love.
What role do you think chivalry has in today’s society?
Chivalry in the Middle Ages was a set of limitations which the strong and mighty placed upon themselves with the realization that setting a good example sends a message that is far more powerful than any words on paper.
Today, we’re not too different from those knights in the Middle Ages — we have a great deal of wealth and resources and freedom at our disposal, and we can use (or misuse) them in nearly any way we like.
Perhaps chivalry in modern society is simply a choice. It is the choice to do the right things, for the right reasons, at the right times.
