What do you know about The Lord of the Rings?
Who was the author of the novel?

What do you know about A Song of Ice and Fire?
Who is the author of the novels?
George R.R. Martin (1948- )

II. Pre-reading
What’s the difference between The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien and A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin?
The Lord of the Rings takes people to Middle-earth to witness a battle of good and evil with dwarves, fairies  and wizards .
And in A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of novels invites people to another fictional world in which powerful families compete to win the most important throne of all.

III. Careful reading
Read the article again and answer the following questions.
1. What has made Martin’s fictional world so popular?
Martin has something original to say and an original way to say it. 

2. Why has the daughter of the former king drawn readers’ attention?
Because she can control dragons and wants to sit on the “Iron Throne”.

3. What has made Martin’s works successful?
The complex characters, the plots and the questions that it asks.

4. What can you tell about the characters in Martin’s books?
They are complex. It’s even difficult to know who is good and who is evil.

5. According to the passage, what do many writers do while writing fantasy books?
They try to copy Tolkien or J.K. Rowling.

IV. Language Point
It is these complex characters, suspenseful (令人紧张的) plots and questions that his novels ask that have left readers and TV viewers unsure but desperate (极度渴望的) to find out what happens next in Martin’s fictional world.
It is/was … that … 是强调句型。被强调部分为these complex characters, suspenseful plots and questions。后面还有一个that引导定语从句。
It was my father who took the photos yesterday.
It is Martin’s writing that makes the story special.

V. Detailed reading
1. What happens to Eliza Doolittle in the play?
She is insulted by an upper-class professor named Henry Higgins when the professor hears her accent.

2. According to the passage, what is a “lady” like?
A “lady” is a respectable upper-class woman who can attend society events and show good manners.

3. Why was one often identified by the way he or she spoke?
Because it was difficult for a person from one class to meet and get on with a person from another.

4. Where do most people know the story of Eliza from?
Most people know the story through the film of the musical My Fair Lady.

5. Who was Herbert Beerbohm Tree?
He was both an actor and a theater manager who changed the ending of the play.

6. What did Shaw do with Herbert?
Shaw criticized Herbert with anger and wit, and he wrote an essay explaining the impossibility of the two main characters getting married.

VI. Usage tip
It is one thing for a teacher to criticize..., It is quite another to be criticized...
… one thing … another … 在这里意思为“... 是一回事,... 又是另外一回事”,通常带有转折的含义。使用时,要注意前后形态的对应,如:
To say it is one thing, to do it is quite another.
说是一回事,做又是另一回事.

It was filled with poverty, hunger, love and good friends.

3. What did author learn in that house?
He learned about family unity, discipline and caring for others.

4. What did author want to do with the house first?
He planned to sell the house and make a profit from it.

5. Why did the author change his mind about selling the house?
He thought he had already been so successful as a real estate developer and entrepreneur that it was time to start giving back.

6. What does the author encourage others to do?
He hopes that everyone will open their hearts and offer what they can to help someone else’s dreams come true.

VII. Usage tip
Still, something didn’t feel “right”.
Still 做形容词使用时,表示“静止的” “平静的”,作副词使用时,表示“仍旧”,或用于修饰比较级,例如:We still need to study harder. 作连词使用时,表示“尽管如此”,即为本文用法。
