Britons Losing Touch with Breakfast (P4-5)
I. Lead-in
•What do you usually eat in the morning?
•Let’s take a look at some Chinese-style breakfast foods.
Youtiao (a Chinese oil stick) and soybean milk
Traditional steamed buns
Warm noodles and soup
Or some may eat a Western-style breakfast

II. Reading
1. Skimming
•What is the most important thing for the author to do in the morning and why?
(Eating breakfast is the most important thing, because it is the one thing that the author cannot skip.)
2. Scanning
•Does the author keep having the same kinds of foods in the morning?
(No, she doesn't. Her breakfasts at the weekend are especially different.)
3. Detailed reading
1) What does author usually eat on the mornings of work days?
(She usually eats oat porridge with many different kinds of flavors.)
2)According to the article, what are Britons famous for?
(Britons are famous for their full English breakfast, which contains a lot of different foods.)
3) What change has modern life brought to breakfast?
(Many Brits now regularly eat “deskfast”.)
4) According to the article, what is the result of “deskfast”?
(Some of her colleagues spit breadcrumbs and chocolate all over their keyboards.)
5) Have Britons lost the culture of breakfast? Why or why not?
(No, they don't. Some of the author's colleagues still have breakfast at home and the so-called “deskfast” is just a reward to have at work.)

III. Language work:
1. Find sentences that the writer uses to talk about her breakfast.
•Work days (Or weekdays) means porridge.
•One day I’ll add in apple and raisins, the next I’ll treat myself to a huge spoonful of honey.
•At the weekend, I really go crazy. (A full English breakfast is the way to celebrate a Saturday or Sunday.)
•Breakfast is like winding up a clock – I need the process of chew and swallow to get me going.
2.  Talk about the different types of breakfast you have over a week. Try borrowing the author’s expressions and sentences.
3. Blended words formed from two others:
•Deskfast: desk + (break)fast
•Brunch: br(eakfast)+(l)unch
•Motel: mo(tor) + ho(tel)
•Smog: sm(oke) + (f)og
•Biopic: bio(graphical) + pic(ture)
•Spork: sp(oon) + (f)ork
IV. Consolidation or homework:
1. Role play:
One student acts as a Teens reporter. Another plays Ellie, the author. Write and act out an interview about Ellie’s breakfast and her view of breakfast.
2. Make a Powerpoint presentation about your breakfast over a week. Write brief descriptions to go with the photos of the foods.

What shoulders show (P5)
I. Pre-reading
Discuss the following questions with your partner.
What do your shoulders do?
What are the differences between human shoulders and those of apes?

II. Reading
Read the article and answer the following questions.
1. What is the relationship between humans and apes according to the study?
Contrary to popular belief, humans did not evolve from apes like chimpanzees. In fact, we share a common ancestor and split from our ape relatives 6 to 7 million years ago.
2. How did researchers study the changing shape of scapular bones to find out about our common ancestor with apes?
They created a 3-D simulation of different human and ape scapulas and tested several different theories to see which made the most sense.
3. What is the best explanation for the changes in human shoulder shapes according to the study?
It was found that it was a slow change, starting with the last common ancestor and ending in humans.
4. What were the benefits of early humans’ slowly-formed lateral scapular spines?
They would have been much more effective in using tools, especially when it came to throwing stones.
5. How did the throwing ability likely help our ancestors according to Neil Roach?
It likely helped them hunt and protect themselves, turning humans into the most dominant predators on Earth.
6. What is the significance of understanding the evolution of the human shoulder?
It could help researchers to decide when humans began using tools more, and even when they learned to throw and hunt with weapons. Also, the information could be helpful in understanding why some people are better at doing things like throwing or lifting and why certain people are more likely to suffer shoulder injuries.

Read the article again and choose the best answer.
1. What did scientists from the University of California San Francisco find from their study?
A. Humans evolved from apes 6 to 7 million years ago.
B. Apes have evolved a lot in the past 7 million years.
C. The changing shape of scapulas sheds new light on human evolution.
D. Our common ancestor with apes looked a lot like modern humans.
C。由第2段可知,科学家们从他们的研究中发现人类并不是从猿猴进化而来,而是拥有共同的祖先,所以A不对;由第四段的“The study also showed that the last common ancestor looked much more like apes than it did modern humans. This suggests apes have changed very little in the past 7 million years while humans have evolved a lot.”
2. What can we conclude from Paragraphs 5-6?
A. Early humans’ slowly-formed vertical scapular spines made them great throwers and predators.
B. Apes’ lateral scapular spine gave them an advantage when climbing or swinging through the trees.
C. Their throwing skills probably helped early humans and apes better protect themselves.
D. Changes in early humans’ shoulder shapes were probably driven by their increased use of tools at first.
D。由第四段的“As the study found out, the best explanation for the shoulder shapes is a slow change, starting with the last common ancestor and ending in humans.”
3. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
A. The significance of the study.
B. The background of the study.
C. Other studies related to the evolution of the human shoulder.
D. How the study could help us understand changes in humans’ behavior.

III. Language study
1. As the study found out, the best explanation for the shoulder shapes is a slow change, starting with the last common ancestor and ending in humans.
本句的主干是:the best explanation for the shoulder shapes is a slow change。
2. The study also showed that the last common ancestor looked much more like apes than it did modern humans.
3. Our unique throwing ability likely helped our ancestors hunt and protect themselves, turning our species into the most dominant predators on earth.
Turn … into 把……

2. What did Mary do when Kenny pulled out the red purse from the plastic grocery bag?
Mary’s thin old hands flew up to her face in a gesture of wonder and joy, then flew out hungrily like a starved child taking bread. Mary grabbed the red purse. She held it for a moment, just to see it, then pressed it to her breast, rocking it like a baby.
