Background information:
Claude Monet: 
克劳德•莫奈(1840-1926),法国画家,印象派代表人物和创始人之一。莫奈是法国最重要的画家之一,印象派的理论和实践 大部份都有他的推广。莫奈擅长光与影的实验与表现技法。他最重要的风格是改变了阴影和轮廓线的画法,在莫奈的画作中看不到非常明确的阴影,也看不到突显或 平涂式的轮廓线。

印象派绘画是西方绘画史上划时代的艺术流派,19世纪七八十年代达到了它的鼎盛时期,其影响遍及欧洲,并逐渐传播到世界各地,但它在法国取得了最为辉煌的艺术成就。19世纪后半叶到20世纪初,法国涌现出一大批印象派艺术大师,他们创作出大量至今仍令人耳熟能详的经典巨制,例如,莫奈的《日出•印象》。
II. Skimming
Read the passage and decide what the main idea of the passage is.
The Beijing World Art Museum is holding a high-tech art show that displays about 400 high-resolution copies of Monet’s work and chronicles (记录) the life of the artist himself.
III. Scanning
1. Who changed Monet’s destiny as a painter?
A local painter named Eugene Boudin whose outdoor paintings opened Monet’s eyes to the beauty of nature.
2. Why did he paint the same scene from sunrise to sunset?
Because Monet focused on painting outdoor landscapes (风景). But the effects of light on nature’s landscape always change, so he would paint the same scene from sunrise to sunset.
3. Why did the author say that Monet was not a painter but a hunter?
He took six canvases and painted on them one after the other, following the changes of the sun and shadows and capturing (捕捉) in a few brushstrokes (笔画) the ray that fell or the cloud that passed.
4. What did his Impressionist style show?
It showed his harmony with the natural world. 
IV. Sentence structure
1. It was while drawing in the local marketplace that Monet met his first teacher, a local painter named Eugene Boudin whose outdoor paintings opened his eyes to the beauty of nature.
本句中,It was --- that---为强调句,被强调部位为时间状语。a local painter 为his first teacher 的同位语,whose引导的是定语从句。
V. Vocabulary

bear witness to: 证实,证明
They bore witness to his achievements.

How much do you remember your childhood?
Did you enjoy your childhood? Can you list any deep impressions of your childhood?
II. Skimming
Read the passage and decide what the the passage is mainly about.
Staying with the author’s husband’s granddaughter made the author think that people should enjoy their childhood and their children and grandchildren’s childhoods.
III. Scanning
1. How does the author feel about the baby sleeping on her bed?
She is happy.
2. Why did the baby’s mom ask the author if she would like to brush the baby’s hair?
She thought the author might have forgotten how to brush a little girl’s hair.
3. What did the author remember while brushing the girl’s hair?
She remembered all the times she had brushed her daughter’s hair. 
4. What does the author want to say in the last four paragraphs?
She wants to say that childhood is beautiful and people should enjoy it.
IV. Sentence structure
1. This might be the most fun I’ve ever had working
I have ever had working 为fun的定语从句。句中有词组 have fun working
2. It had been years since I had brushed a little girl’s hair. 
该句意为:我有好多年没有给小女孩梳理头发了。
Since引导的时间状语从句中,如果动词时延续性的,并且用在过去时时,意为“自从不干---有多久了”。
It had been years since I had enjoyed such a good time.
3. She doesn’t even wear diapers (尿布) any more – except when she’s sleeping.
He usually rides his bicycle to work, except when it rains.
除了下雨的时候,他通常骑自行车去上班。
V. Vocabulary
1. Charlotte and her parents live in California, some 500 miles (805km) from our home in Las Vegas.
some: about 大约
They own some 300 acres of land.

2. … my husband was the good sport who jumped right in and pretended he wasn’t freezing.
A good sport: 本意:输得起的人。此处引申为:运动员风度的人,有勇敢性格的人。
