III. Detailed reading:
1. How did the author feel at the beginning of every school year? Why?
He was afraid because he feared getting a teacher who had a long list of rules and a stare that could kill a cat.
2. What is the one part of the beginning of the school year that the author liked?
He liked going to the store to arm himself with new school supplies, new clothes and book bags.
3. Why did the children feel happy about these new things?
The new things meant they could show up at school smelling like a new car and make sure others saw them and envied them.
4. What about their parents? Why did they buy new things for their children while the old ones were still useable?
They thought buying these things was worth it, and maybe their children would study harder at school.
IV. Discussion:
What’s your opinion of buying new things for children at the beginning of the school year? Are there any other ways that can be tried to relieve students’ fear and help them quickly get used to school life?
