Enjoy Warhol’s work (P4)

I. Pre-reading
l Who was Andy Warhol?
(an American artist; a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art (波普艺术).)
 
l So what is so special about his artwork?
l Let’s look at a few of his paintings and watch a short video clip made by the Khan Academy:

(teachers, the first 3 minutes of the video clip is enough to show how Warhol challenged people’s idea of what art is)

II. Scanning
Read the article and answer the following questions.
1. What do Warhol’s words about fame mean?
(In the modern world, many more people enjoy fame than before but fame is short-lived unless you have true talent.)
2. Why has Warhol’s fame lasted for so long?
(Answers may vary. e.g. Because of his influence – his works started discussions of “what makes art”; he left his mark in many more ways than his actual work. Or: His ideas and works of art have stayed in the public’s minds.)
3. What was Warhol like in others’ eyes?
(Answers may vary. According to Peter Wollen, he was a “Renaissance man”, the man who made mundane objects into art.
To Christopher Makos, he was an artist whose fame will last as long as the stuff in his works of art does.
Jon Savage considers him someone who summed up, defined and in many ways symbolized the present world.)
4. The article was mainly written to ____.
(introduce readers to some of Warhol’s ideas and works of art and describe his influence on art and culture)
5. Read the article again and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F).
•According to Peter Wollen, Warhol might be called a “Renaissance man” because of his many talents. (T)
•According to Christopher Makos, Warhol will have his fame as long as Campbell’s soup cans remain on our shelves. (T)

III. Language Work
Collect phrases and sentences about fame and Warhol’s influence.

His works … turn mundane, daily objects into art, and that against starts discussion of the timeless question of ‘What makes art.
Warhol left his mark in many more ways than his actual work.
Besides his paintings, Warhol made his influence known through his movies, his photos and his celebrity magazine Interview.
He summed up, defined and in many ways symbolized the world in which we now live.

IV. Post-reading
Discussion: (Choose a topic)
1.What do you think of Warhol’s words about fame – “everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes”?
2.What do you think of his paintings?

V. Homework
Choose one of the following:
•Write a short piece based on your discussion.
•Write about or make a poster or short video about an artist that you like, talking about his or her ideas, works of art and influence.

(Her US colleagues could not understand her friendly greetings.)

(It published a guide to British English for Americans.)
3. Which differences between American English and British English are mentioned? Can you find some examples?
(There are different spellings in both languages.
There are different expressions in British English and American English for the same thing.
For example:  chips/French fries,   crisps/potato chips, underground/subway,  films/movies,  pants/underwear. )

IV. Read for detail. Read, think and answer the questions.
1. Why does the author mention her conversation with an American colleague at the beginning of the article?
(To describe the trouble caused by the differences between British and American English.)
2. What’s the function of Paragraph 7?
 (This paragraph is a linking paragraph that leads into the following paragraphs.)
3. What’s the author’s attitude toward the language differences? 
(She thinks it’s necessary for Americans and others to learn the differences.)

I. Useful Information
Groundhog Day is a traditional holiday celebrated on February 2. The holiday’s modern customs involve early morning celebrations while watching the groundhog emerge from its burrow.
 
Arbor Day is a holiday during which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. Today, many countries observe this holiday in the spring, and the date varies, depending on the climate and a suitable planting season.
 
A depression is a time when there is very little economic activity, which causes a lot of unemployment and poverty. The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that took place during the 1930s.
 

II. Pre-reading
Looking at the title “What Mom gave me”, can you predict what the article says the writer’s mom gave?

III. Read quickly, and check your predictions:
