Researchers test cupping (P5)
太原市外国语学校    王丽媛

I. Warming up
What is cupping?
Cupping is an ancient Chinese method of easing local congestion. A partial vacuum is created in cups placed on the skin either by means of heat or suction. This draws up the underlying tissues. When the cup is left in place on the skin for a few minutes, blood stasis happens and localized healing takes place.
Now plastic cups based on the traditional fire cups have appeared, applying traditional cupping therapy together with magnetic therapy. The new cups have done away with traditional firing. This has made the cups easier and safer to apply. It is said to have a good penetrating effect and give strength. It has not only improved efficacy but also simplified the procedure of cupping therapy.

II. Pre-reading
Watch the video CUPPING THERAPY IN RIO, and try to find out the answer to the following question:
Was traditional cupping therapy popular with Team USA?
Yes, it was.

III. Reading
Read the article and try to answer the following question:
What is the article mainly about?
Explaining cupping therapy and exploring whether it is physically effective.

What conclusion did researchers come to as a result of the test?
The results of the test suggest the effects of cupping therapy might come from factors that are not necessarily part of the treatment itself, so this question still needs to be answered.

Try to judge whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F) according to the article you have read:
1. Cupping therapy has been around in China for more than 2,000 years. T
2. Cupping therapy leaves dark red bruises every time.  F
3. Many athletes say that they have suffered as a result of cupping therapy.  F
4. To figure out whether cupping therapy has any physical effects, a test was carried out in Germany. T
5. In the test, a new kind of cupping therapy called “soft cupping” was tried out.               F
6. Cupping therapy is relatively safe and helpful for some people. T

IV. Discussion
Have you ever benefited from cupping therapy?
How about your family members or friends?
When would you/they have cupping therapy?
When do you think it helps?

V. Writing
You can choose either Topic 1 or Topic 2.
Topic 1:
Write an article about your experience of cupping therapy.
Topic 2:
Do some research about the effectiveness of cupping therapy and write an article about it.
