I. Warming up
Can you name any US national parks?
            
Some examples are Yosemite in California, Yellowstone in Wyoming and Badlands in South Dakota.

How much do you know about the US National Park Service?
The National Park Service (NPS) is in charge of the country’s 59 national parks and hundreds of historic landmarks (地标). It was created on August 25, 1916.

Many believe they were established to preserve the US’ identity. They were a symbol of the undeveloped nation, and made its people believe they could be greater and live purposefully.
 
4. Who or what are the problem solvers mentioned in the article?
National Parks.
 
The significance of national parks
l US national parks show long-term humanity , as humans have changed the idea of wilderness.
l National parks show natural and human history together in living museums.
 
Problem solvers
l Some parks are national libraries where researchers find lost writings and which show lost human histories.
l More of these parks may provide answers to the future’s most difficult problems, such as effective solutions to sea level rise and hurricanes (飓风).
 
l As Jonathan B. Jarvis, director of the National Park Service, concluded, “National parks reflect the innovative (创新的) spirit of America, because after all, they show one of our nation’s most revolutionary ideas  – that some of the most beautiful landscapes, famous historic sites and culturally and scientifically significant places should belong to every American.”

When the national parks were opened, it was believed that they were wilderness, something untouched by humanity.
When引导状语从句,主句中it为形式主语,实际内容为that引导的主语从句。 
e.g.
1. It is suggested that you carry out the work with great care.
2. It is said that he had gone to Hangzhou to attend the G20 Summit.
 
For example, a good part of what American explorers thought was wilderness had been farmed before.
句中what引导宾语从句,作介词of的宾语。

Does the town have a confused identity, according to the author? Why?
It is both a result of a history of wars and a result of hundreds of years of sharing
It shows more how the Scottish and English peoples’ identities have come together.
 
What is the border used for?  
The border is nothing more than signs at the side of the road. There are no barriers, there are no guards, there is no passport control. 
What is the author’s attitude toward the special identity of the town?
He is in favor of the mixing and sharing of England and Scotland. He feels that the present relationship between them offers the best of both worlds. He doesn’t want to see it end. 

 

Ⅳ. Language focus

Because the author told us it is the author himself who made the goal and tried to reach it in the end, no matter how bad the living situation was.
 
2. What were the two questions the author asked himself often? Why did he do so?
The two questions were: what did he want in life and were the things he was doing going to get him closer to that life?
By asking himself these two questions, he reminded himself of his goal and urged himself to pursue his goal.
 
3. What’s the function of the last paragraph?
To make readers think about their own dreams or goals and try to reach them.
