IV. Sentence structure
1. I smiled, as the man’s words made me happy in a dark week of midterms and job interviews. 
As we made our way across the street, he told me he had been shot and had seven surgeries in the past couple of years.   
第一个句中,as引导的是原因状语从句;第二个句中,as引导的是时间状语从句。
2. He called getting better a “vacation” because in that kind of situation, that was the only way he could deal with what had happened. 
句中because引导原因状语从句,he could deal with what had happened是省略了关系词that的定语从句,修饰先行词the only way。
3. I looked back at him, thankful that our short conversation had made my day.
句中thankful that 是形容词作伴随状语,说明句子主语的状况。相当于:I was thankful that our short conversation had made my day。
4. UCLA supports its students to follow their dreams, whatever that path may be. 
句中whatever 引导的是让步状语从句。
eg: 1. Whatever you do, I won't tell you my secret. 
不管你做什么,我都不会把我的秘密告诉你。 
2. Whatever happens, the important thing is to keep cool
不管发生什么事,头等重要的是保持冷静。
