IV. Sentence structure

第一个句中，as引导的是原因状语从句；第二个句中，as引导的是时间状语从句。

2. He called getting better a “vacation” because in that kind of situation, that was the only way he could deal with what had happened. 

句中because引导原因状语从句，he could deal with what had happened是省略了关系词that的定语从句，修饰先行词the only way。

3. I looked back at him, thankful that our short conversation had made my day.

句中thankful that 是形容词作伴随状语，说明句子主语的状况。相当于：I was thankful that our short conversation had made my day。

句中whatever 引导的是让步状语从句。
