Jane Austen ever popular (P4-5)
太原市外国语学校    王丽媛

I. Warming up
Do you know Jane Austen? Which works of hers do you like most?

Jane Austen (1775-1817)
Jane Austen was an English writer. She gave her novels a modern character through the treatment of everyday life. Although Austen was widely read in her lifetime, she published her works anonymously(匿名地). The most urgent preoccupation(当务之急) of her young heroines is courtship(求婚), then finally marriage. Austen herself never married. Her best-known books include PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1813) and EMMA (1816).
This summer, Jane Austen will be made the face of the new £10 note to take the place of Charles Darwin, whose face appeared on the note in 2000.

II. Pre-reading

Most of her fiction is about young women of the late 18th century.

3. What is the joy of Austen’s stories? Which fiction is mentioned to illustrate this point?

4. What it the main plot of Pride and Prejudice?
The love-hate relationship between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy.

5. Why is Jane Austen still popular 200 years after her death?
Although there have been many changes since Austen’s time, it’s still the greatest challenge in life for men and women to find the partner of their dreams, which is the topic of most of Austen's works.

Try to judge whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F) according to the article you have read:

2, Jane Austen was well-known around the world before she passed away in 1817.

7, The pleasure of reading Pride and Prejudice is to find out how obstacles are overcome and how the comical and unexpected ending is achieved.
