Simple Life Makes Us Happy (P1)
浙江省金华市外国语学校    翁冰玫

I. Warming up
Free talk:
1.Everybody seeks happiness in their lives, but what is happiness? And what makes us happy?
2.There has long been a notion that money buys happiness. What do you think?

Money doesn't equal happiness. Too much stuff doesn't mean happiness.

II. Pre-reading
Predict what the article is about according to the title “Simple life makes us happy”.

III. While-reading
1.Read through the article, and answer :
Who are they? What do these people have in common?

All of them have something to do with Minimalism.

2. Read the article again, think , discuss and answer:
1) What is minimalism?
Minimalism is a lifestyle, whose followers are usually environment-concerned and value a simple and light way of life .
2) What is the author’s intention of mentioning Jay’s story?
Jay’s story is told at the beginning, mainly to introduce the topic of minimalism.
3) What can you learn from the article about how to live a simpler life?
To live a simpler way, the key is to unload, which means you should live with just the essentials, no extra possessions.
4) Does simplicity ever feel like a sacrifice?
Simplicity is getting rid of unused items and unnecessary purchases. It’s a way to lighten a load and spare more space, time and money for more important things. It’s not in the least a sacrifice.

3.Read carefully, and analyze some opinions listed in the article.
1) “I wanted to spend my time and energy on experiences, rather than things.” (By Francine Jay)
As a minimalist, it’s expected you care less about materials, and more about contact with nature and the world.
2) “Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers”. (By William Wordsworth)
We earn a lot, and we spend a lot as well. Too much consuming has destroyed ourselves as well as nature.
3) “It’s eliminating the excess… -- minimalism is making room for what matters most.” (By Jay)
Minimalism is about removing the excess possessions, which creates more space to welcome in more important things in your life.
4) “ It’s important for people to realize… It’s about how we touch the whole world. It’s a way of life.” (By Duane Elgin)
Minimalism is not only a matter of materials, but  a matter of people’s way of life and their attitude towards the world.
