Tale of fatherly love(P1)
I. Leading-in
1.What film is this article about?
•Dangal (2016) (《
2.What do you think this film may be about? Take a guess.

II. Skimming
Read the article quickly and answer the question.
•What does the article mainly talk about?
Introduction to the film Dangal and the reasons why it’s so popular.

III. Scanning
Read the article carefully and answer the following questions.
1.What is the true story which the movie is based upon? Please summarize it briefly.
It’s about an amateur wrestler from India who failed to realize his dream of winning a gold medal for his country but then turned his two daughters into competitive wrestlers.
2.Are the girls interested in wrestling?
At first they show no interest in wrestling. But later when they understand their father’s good intentions, wrestling becomes their own dream.
3.According to the real-life Geeta Phogat, how were the sisters influenced by their father?
Their father gave them inner confidence and taught them never to be scared.
4.What are some of the reasons why the film is so popular in China?
In general, this film is relatable, or familiar to the audience, which is the key to its success.
①This movie is not only about sport but also about a complex father-daughter relationship, showing the father’s silent love, which is familiar to many.
②It shows that it is possible to succeed through efforts.
③The film stars Aamir Khan, who is already famous in China and shows great acting skills in the movie.

IV. Language focus-----sentence pattern
1. And similar to most, if not all, of them, it’s about an underdog (弱者) realizing an impossible dream.
Note:
•e.g., Most, if not all, of the participants, seemed to enjoy the seminar.
an underdog realizing an impossible dream作前面介词about的宾语。

2. As Yahoo noted, this movie is “as much a story about sport as it is about a complex (复杂的) father-daughter relationship”.
Note:
•as much…as…

3. But once they realize that their father may be letting them seek opportunities in life normally saved for men, wrestling becomes their own dream.
Note:
normally saved for men是过去分词短语作后置定语。

•4. This remarkable (不平常的) story would not be complete without the lead actor Aamir Khan.
Note:
•without表“若没有,若不是…”, 与but for意思相近。
•=This remarkable (不平常的) story would not be complete if it weren’t for the lead actor Aamir Khan.
•Another example:
•I wouldn’t have passed the exam without your help.
•Please rewrite the sentence using “if” or “but for”.

5. But he had to quickly shed (甩掉) it for the parts where he is required to look much younger.
Note:
•where he is…
•e.g., He has a good job where he enjoys himself a lot.
•Can you make up sentences with attributive clauses using the words above?

IV. Language focus-----useful expressions
Underline the expressions below and figure out the meaning according to the context.
•manage to stand out
•release
•seek opportunities in life
•a male-dominated sport/ land
•release myself from my deep regrets
•relate to

•chase one’s own dream

V. Post-reading: Discussion

Some ants with larger pieces sometimes had to turn backwards to drag (拖) them. Generally, these ants would set off in the correct direction. But if they stayed too long in the backward position, they would miss the correct turn to reach the nest.

Think before speaking (P6)

I. Warming up
Do you like posting your thoughts online? What about your friends? Do you think we should express our thoughts and feelings freely? Why or why not?

II. Skimming
What does the author mainly want to tell us through this article?
There is value in not expressing every little thought that pops into our heads.

III. Scanning
Read the passage and answer the following questions.
•1. What is the problem with expressing our every thought and feeling?
Our thoughts and feelings can often change quickly. If we express them immediately, we may only create conflict.

•2. Why do important issues need to be addressed?
If we don’t address them, we may cause hatred in our relationships.

•3. What does the author want to tell us by sharing her experience with her children?
Words are not always effective in communication. Sometimes, we can use other ways to communicate. For instance, we can correct children’s behavior by example.

•4. According to the author, what should we do when we don’t like someone’s behavior? Why?
We can choose to walk away. Because it is often a waste of time to argue. But walking away shows that we can control our mood and not regret what we say later.

IV. Vocabulary
•1. In this day and age, at a time when it has become socially acceptable to immediately post every thought we have online, we’ve forgotten the value of the old saying, “Bite your tongue.”
eg. I thought she was acting foolishly, but I bit my tongue and didn’t say anything.

•2 .There is value in not expressing every little thought that pops into our heads.
短语pop into one’s head, 同pop into one’s mind, 意为“突然想起”。
E.g., It popped into my mind that I had to do my homework first..
It occured to me that I had to do my homework first.

•3 . Not every issue needs to be addressed.
address  对付;处理  to give attention to or deal with (a matter or problem)
e.g.
We’re all curious about how the mayor plans to address the issue.
He is going to address a conference on human rights next week.
Applications should be addressed to the business affairs editor.
