A common      People can't live without smartphones due to their various 2. _____.
People were interested to see what the iPhone X had to 3. _____.

People start to build 5. ______ with smartphones.

Key: 1. phenomenon; 2. functions; 3. offer; 4. interact; 5. relationships

4. Read Paragraphs 5-6 and find out the “objection” to people’s attachment to smartphones.
Key:
ØSmartphones are phones after all; they are just devices to talk to other people on.
ØSmartphones are destroying our personal lives. The devices lock us into the “outside” world, and lock us out of the world of family and friends.

Question: How do you understand the sentence in red?
Key:
It means that being attached to our devices causes us to become obsessed with people and things from outside our real lives. Rather than being interested in developing our real relationships, we often spend time checking our phone for messages, or trying to impress strangers on social media with unrealistic photos of our life, etc.

5. What does “relationships” in the title refer to? What is the “art of relationships” according to the passage?
Key: “Relationships” refers to people’s relationships with smartphones.
The “art of relationships” means to strike the right balance in life and find ways to enjoy the advantages that these devices bring, without forgetting that, at the end of the day, they’re the means to an end, not the end itself.

1. Write a summary of Paragraphs 1-4.
Possible version:
With their various functions, smartphones, iPhones in particular, have fascinated the public so much that they have changed the way people interact and are considered as a third hand or an extra eye by some.

Tips on writing a good summary of a short passage:
ØFind out topic sentences of the paragraphs.
ØFind out important ideas of the passage.
ØLeave out the details.
ØTry to organize the important ideas into a complex sentence or two sentences.

2. Discuss and write down the drawbacks brought about by smartphones. You may borrow ideas from Paragraphs 5-6.
Hints:
You may consider the following aspects:
ØHealth
ØPersonal Relationships
ØPotential risks/social problems

Tips on developing ideas:ØFollow the pattern of  “topic sentence + supporting sentences”     Suggested ways of reasoning: Example, assumption, compare and contrast, metaphorØUse transitions to reach the cohesionØAvoid information not related to the central idea.ØUse discourse markers.
However, human’s addiction to smartphones is not without its drawbacks.

3. Discuss and write: How can we avoid the drawbacks discussed in Q2?
Nevertheless, we can surely find ways to enjoy the advantages smartphones bring and avoid their disadvantages._____________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Be a master of your phone rather than a slave to it.

1. Polish three parts and organize them into a coherent passage.
2. Find another passage with the structure of “phenomenon/problem-disadvantages-solutions”; try to analyze its structure and summarize each part.

Possible version of answers to the writing Task 1, 2 and 3:
With their various functions, smartphones, iPhones in particular, have fascinated the public so much that they have changed the way people interact and are considered as a third hand or an extra eye by some.
However, human’s addiction to smartphones is not without its drawbacks. Firstly, smartphones easily distract our attention. No matter what we are doing, the moment the phone makes a sound, many of us find it hard to resist the temptation to read the message or answer the call. Even when the phone is in sleep mode, many of us check it every few seconds just to make sure not a single message is missed. In the long term, it will be hard for us to stay focused. Secondly, smartphones, as it is, distance our relationships and make us lonelier. We quickly “like” friends’ posts on social media but can hardly find a person in our entire friends list to have a heart-to-heart talk with. Friends get together but everyone is glued to his or her phone without a live conversation. Ironically, we enjoy the versatility of smartphones at the cost of our personal relationships.
Nevertheless, we can surely find ways to enjoy the advantages smartphones bring and avoid their disadvantages. First, there are some easy ways to prevent smartphones from interrupting us. Phones can be set in silent mode and placed with the screen down when we are working on important tasks. Also, we can arrange a regular phone-free period. Second, we should strike the right balance in life. Being engaged in activities certainly strengthens social bonds. Switching off our phone when spending time with loved ones is a wise choice. Be a master of your phone rather than a slave to it.
