Quiet style of great author (P4-5)

I. Lead-in

ØDo you know who this man is and what his biggest achievement is?

This is Mo Yan, a famous Chinese author. He was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize for literature.

ØDo you know who won the 2017 Nobel Prize for literature?

Kazuo Ishiguro

II. Skimming

1. What is the nationality of Kazuo Ishiguro?

Britain. He was born in Japan and went to Britain when he was five. He is now a British citizen.

2. What is his writing style?

“Quiet”, as the title says.

III. Scanning

Read the article carefully and answer the following questions.

1. Why did the young Ishiguro turn up at the publishing house with both his stories and guitar?

Because besides writing, he has a number of strings to his bow, or rather his guitar. His early dream was to be a great singer and songwriter.

2. Why do we say Ishiguro's writing style is a quiet style?

Sample answer: His characters are often reluctant to express themselves. (Para. 4)

In the author's sense of the world, there is a gap between our feelings and our ability to communicate them. (Para. 7)

IV. Intensive Reading

Complete the introduction of The Remains of the Day.

V. Vocabulary bank

1. Kazuo Ishiguro, who won this year's Nobel Prize in Literature, has a number of strings to his bow, or rather his guitar.

重点词:have a number of strings to his bow意为“做多手准备,留了多种后备方案”,该短语套用习语have two strings to one’s bow。 因此,人们常用have two strings to one’s bow或者have another/a second string to one’s bow喻指“有两手准备、有第二手准备”。

e.g., He had to walk, or rather run, to the office.

2. Of course, we have to read between the lines to uncover the “real” story...

read between the lines

e.g., If you read between the lines, you will find out the letter is really a request for money.

While appreciating poetry, you must learn to read between the lines.

Ⅵ. Grammar Focus:emphatic sentence

It was his stories that earned him the great honor he received two weeks ago.

It is/was ... that ...

强调句的陈述式为:It is(was)+被强调的部分+that ...

一般疑问句的强调句:Is(was) it+被强调的部分+that ...?

特殊疑问句的强调句:特殊疑问词+is(was) it that ...?

Ⅷ. Discussion

Discuss the meaning of the prize motivation: “ Who, in novels of great emotional force, has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world.”

Ⅸ. Assignment

Make a list of the people awarded the Nobel Prize for literature from 2010 to 2017 and find out their common qualities.

II. Skimming

This text is mainly about a report of a breakthrough in cancer treatment.

Read the text and identify its structure.

Match the paragraphs to the main ideas below.

III. Scanning

Read the text again and answer the following questions

1. How does the gene therapy mentioned in the article help fight leukemia?

The exciting new treatment works by removing healthy immune cells from the patient, known as T-cells, which are then altered to be able to “hunt down” cancer cells.

2. How does bone marrow transplant work?

Healthy blood cells are taken from a donor and placed into the sick patient, who also has to go through chemotherapy to allow their body to adjust to the new cells.

3. Compared with bone marrow transplant, what are the advantages of gene therapy?

This new treatment has a higher rate of survival and recovery and it may be less drawn-out and less painful.

4. What is Scott Gottlieb’s attitude toward gene and cell therapies and from which sentence can you draw this conclusion?

Optimistic.

“New technologies such as gene and cell therapies hold the potential to transform medicine and… our ability to treat and even cure many intractable (难治的) illnesses.”
