Speak with pride (P1)

I. Warming up
Do you know who this man is?
How do you understand his words, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart”?
II. While reading
What’s the article mainly about?
The article mainly introduces International Mother Language Day. It explains why on Feb 21, the United Nations holds International Mother Language Day to raise awareness of dying languages, as well as to profile the people who are struggling to preserve them.
1. What do people who speak an ancient tongue as their mother language feel about it?
For the people who speak an ancient tongue as their mother language, it is the repository (贮藏库) of tradition. The language is their main link with their ancestors. And it’s also how they imagine the future.
2. Why have many languages disappeared in recent years?
The answer has to do with globalization. With greater trade and communication, the planet has become smaller. It’s become more useful to speak certain languages.
3. How have people responded to this phenomenon?
There are people and organizations all over the world that aren’t prepared to accept a planet with fewer and fewer languages. Through efforts both large and small, they are getting people to speak and read in certain languages, and to pass them on.
4. Have their efforts been recognized?
The United Nations recognizes this work. This is why each year on Feb 21, it holds International Mother Language Day to raise awareness of dying languages, as well as profile the people who are struggling to preserve them.
III. Language study
1. We can communicate in a more nuanced (微妙的) way through our mother language, _______ (express) our emotions and moods more fluently.
分析:expressing our emotions and moods more fluently为现在分词短语,与主语we为主动关系,在句中做结果状语。
2. As US writer Rita Mae Brown wrote, “Language is the roadmap of a culture. It tells ____ its people come from and _____ they are going”.
那样”,类似的表达有as we know, as is often the case等。
IV. Discussion
1. What’s your understanding of the title of the article?
2. What can we do to stop languages from disappearing?

1. What is chocolate usually used for?
2. Which plant is chocolate produced from?
3. Does climate change have an impact on the production of chocolate? Why?

III. Scanning
True or False

2. Changes to the climate in the regions that produce cacao may mean that cacao will die out soon. (T)
According to an essay published by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, changes to the climate in the regions that produce cacao – the plant from which chocolate is produced – may mean that it will soon become extinct.
1. Most of the world’s cacao grows in countries close to the equator (赤道), with over half of it growing in the African nations of Ghana and Ivory Coast. What does it refer to?

2. What are researchers doing to adapt cacao to drier conditions?
Key: They are working on changing the DNA of cacao plants to allow them to survive in drier conditions.
3. Why is it difficult for cacao to grow in countries with rising temperatures?

IV. Language study
Translate the sentences. Pay attention to the sentence structures.
1. From the loss of wildlife to rising sea levels, we’re all well aware of the problems that climate change could cause.

4. The problem doesn’t lie in increased heat, however, but in lower humidity (湿度), as it’s believed that rainfall will stay at the same level if the temperature rises.

5. In the meantime, US company Mars, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers (制造商) of chocolate products, announced in January that it would spend $1 billion (6.33 billion yuan) to help reduce its contribution to climate change.
