Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions.
1. Why did Harvey Ball create the smiley face?
He was asked by a company in the US to find a way to raise workers’ spirits. 
 
2. What message does World Smile Day convey?
Remember to smile every day. Smile to each other and smile to the world. 
 
3. When the smiley face is used today, does it still have its original meaning? How did it lose this meaning?
No. When people use the smiley face now, they usually use it in a sarcastic way. At the same time, the smiley face has evolved into other faces, which are also used sarcastically. 
 
4. What does the sentence “ happiness and smiling go both ways” mean? 
Sometimes, your joy is the source of your smile. But sometimes, your smile can be the source of your joy.

It is known that Harvey Ball created the smiley face to raise workers’ spirits. Soon, the smiley face was introduced to the world. Ball named the first Friday of every October as World Smile Day in 1999. It fell on October 5 this year. It is intended to remind people to smile every day.

Have you ever read any of his works?
 
Background Information
  George Orwell was an English novelist, journalist and critic. Orwell wrote literary criticism, poetry, fiction and polemical journalism. He is best known for Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). His non-fiction works include The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), which documented working class life in northern England; and Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experience in the Spanish Civil War. In 2008, The Times ranked him second on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".
 
Which ideas from the novel entered everyday culture? Let’s find out.
