Lead-in
What do you know about Notre Dame Cathedral?
Notre Dame Cathedral
Built in 1163, it is one of the first Gothic cathedrals to have arched (拱形的) exterior (外部的) supports, known as “flying buttresses (飞扶壁)”. It also combined Gothic art with Christian architecture.
stained glass rose windows
These windows are made of many small panes (窗格) and feature various Christian images.
The Hunchback of Notre-Dame
Victor Hugo began writing the novel in 1829, largely to make his contemporaries more aware of the value of the Gothic architecture, which was neglected and often destroyed to be replaced by new buildings.

Unfortunately, while undergoing renovation and restoration, the roof of Notre-Dame caught fire on the evening of 15 April 2019 (local time). Burning for around 15 hours, the cathedral sustained serious damage, including the destruction of the spire and most of the lead-covered wooden roof above the stone vaulted ceiling.

Reading for details
Answer the following questions:
1. Why is Notre Dame so important?
It’s more than a house of worship. It’s a symbol of French culture, architecture and history. The church itself, after all, is a historical and artistic treasure. The church is also home to many religious artifacts, paintings and sculptures.
2. What did Parisians do upon hearing the sad news?
They gathered around the giant church, singing hymns and praying for the hundreds of firefighters who fought the flames.
3. Which parts of Notre Dame survived the fire, according to the article?
The stained glass rose windows and most of the church’s holy relics including the crown of thorns and tunic of Saint Louis.
4. What did French President Emmanuel Macron say in a public speech following the fire?
He promised to reconstruct the historic building. “Notre Dame is our history, it’s our literature, it’s our imagery,” he said in a public speech following the fire.
5. Why did Hugo write the novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame?
He wrote the book to remind people of Paris’ forgotten Gothic architecture, with hope they would work to protect the beautiful old buildings of Paris.
