Discussion

Do you want to rank first in your exams?

Soccer players want to hold the World Cup trophy.

Mountaineers dream of reaching the highest peak on the planet – Mount Qomolangma.

Tennis players crave a Grand Slam win.

Mount Everest / Qomolangma

Qomolangma, which means "Goddess" in Tibetan, is also called Mount Everest. It’s Earth’s tallest mountain, with an altitude of 8,848.13 metres. Each year, more and more mountaineers come from around the world. They hope to fulfill a life-long dream of climbing and looking down from the world's highest peak.

While Reading

Fast Reading

What’s the main idea of the passage?

Deaths and pollution on Qomolangma are caused by inexperienced climbers with ignorant attitudes.

Read the text carefully and answer the following questions.

1.What tragedy does the story describe?

During this year’s climbing season, from March to May – at least 11 climbers died in the Himalayas, making it one of the worst seasons on record.

2.What things caused this tragedy?

And the fact that many of the climbers were inexperienced is one of the major factors (因素) contributing to the tragedy, according to USA Today.

“They don’t train very hard. They underestimate (低估) [Qomolangma],” Jangbu Sherpa, who has been working as a guide on Mount Qomolangma since 2006, told NBC News. “There are lots of climbers who just want to check the box so that they can say they’ve been to the top of the world.”

3.What other problems do these things cause?

According to HuffPost, the mountain’s cleaning group collected 12 tons of trash – including food wrappers (包装袋), and oxygen tanks – left behind this climbing season. This once holy (神圣的) and peaceful corner of the world has, as The Atlantic reporter Margret Grebowics put it, “lost its magic”.

4.What’s the real meaning of climbing Qomolangma ?

Perhaps what we should do now is restore meaning to the activity itself – real meaning. And for Alison Levine, a US mountaineer who reached the summit (山顶) of Qomolangma in 2010, the meaning doesn’t come with the summit itself, but with everything that led her up to it. “When I did make it to the summit, what I realized is that standing on top of a mountain doesn’t change you and doesn’t change the world,” Levine told the NPR. “It’s really about the journey. The journey is the most important thing on any mountain.”

Fill in the blanks:

1. For the same reason that soccer players want to hold the World Cup trophy (奖杯) and tennis players ____(渴望)a Grand Slam win, mountaineers dream of ____________(到达最高顶)on the planet – Qomolangma, which _____ (高耸)about 8,844 meters above sea level.

2. However, this __________(征服的渴望)has become so strong that we have begun to travel___________    (朝着错误的方向.

3. During this year’s climbing season – from March to May – at least 11 climbers died in the Himalayas, —_____(make)it one of the worst seasons______(记录在案的).

4.“They don’t train very hard. They _________(低估) [Qomolangma],” “There are lots of climbers who just want to _________(打卡)so that they can say they’ve been to the top of the world.”

5. This _________(无知的态度)of climbers also ______(导致)other problems – apart from________________(将他们的生命置于危险之中), of course.

6. According to HuffPost, the mountain’s cleaning group _____(收集)12 tons of trash – including food wrappers (包装袋), and oxygen tanks –________(被留下)this climbing season.

7. Perhaps what we should do now is ______(恢复;还原)meaning to the activity itself – real meaning.

8. And for Alison Levine, a US mountaineer who ____________(到达山顶) of Mount Qomolangma in 2010, the meaning doesn’t _________(伴随···发生)the summit itself, but with everything that led her up to it.

9. It’s true that we humans like to conquer. But the first step of conquering anything is probably to learn to___________________________(战胜自己的贪婪和无知).

Post-reading

Colorado climber Christopher John Kulish, 62, died on Monday after reaching the summit of Everest from the Nepalese side.

Everest has been making headlines around the world this season because of overcrowding, bad weather and a lot of deaths. At least 11 climbers have died on Everest this year and 21 in the Himalayas. The long lines on Everest are gone and the spring season is nearly over.

“With a single route to the summit, delays caused by overcrowding could prove fatal so I am hopeful my decision to go for the 25th will mean fewer people. Unless of course everyone else plays the same waiting game,” British climber Robin Haynes Fisher wrote on Instagram in early May before falling ill and dying.
