According to a recent report by financial technology firm Alipay, China’s post-90s generation begin to manage their money at age of 23 on average, about 10 years earlier than their parents. The digital credit platform Huabei is also a popular service among the younger generation, helping them to make the most out of their money and avoiding overspending.
2. Why do some believe that China’s young people should start to learn how to manage money as early as possible?
Learning how to manage money could prevent children from misusing their money.
It came after a series of cases in which kids were found to have misused their parents’ money. Some experts believe that helping children cultivate (培养) a strong FQ can help prevent these incidents (事件).
3. What do some schools do to help children manage their money?
To deal with this issue, primary schools in cities like Lanzhou and Shenzhen have introduced wealth management courses, Sixth Tone reported. Many kindergartens in Shanghai have designed simple games to help children understand how money is used.
4. What do other countries do?
In fact, the idea of developing a child’s FQ has been put into practice in many foreign countries.
In Japan, children are taught that everything has to be earned through work, China Daily reported. In the United States, a three-year-old child is taught to recognize different coins and bank notes, and children as young as six are expected to understand the value of money and are encouraged to do part-time work after school to earn extra money.

Discussion
Do you have other ideas for improving children’s FQ?
Kids should be taught how to recognize coins and bills at three, learn how to buy simple goods on their own at four, understand that money can be made from work and learn how to count coins and notes at five.
Parents should teach their children to read price tags and learn how to make purchase decisions at the age of seven. An eight-year-old should start to save money and be encouraged to make extra money from running errands.
At nine, kids should be able to plan their expenses. And 10-year-olds should learn to forego (放弃) consumption of less important items to be able to save money for more valuable goods.
Parents should also train their children to compare prices, use coupons and take advantage of discounts at 11. At age 12, kids should be able to make bi-weekly expense plans and learn to use banks.
