Messed up for success (P4-5)

山东省烟台第二中学 赵娜娜

Lead-in

Do you agree that the roles actors play might somehow reflect their true personalities?

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is an exception

Just like Fleabag, the character she played in the comedy-drama series of the same name, Waller-Bridge feels that her life is a mess.

Fleabag

A woman known as Fleabag has no filter as she navigates life and love in London while trying to cope with tragedy. The angry, grief-riddled woman tries to heal while rejecting anyone who tries to help her, but Fleabag continues to keep up her bravado through it all.

Reading for main idea

What’s the main idea of the text?

  1. To introduce the family life of Waller-Bridge.
  2. To recommend the comedy-drama Fleabag.
  3. To celebrate Waller-Bridge’s winning the Emmys.
  4. To show the achievements Waller-Bridge has made and the reasons behind them.

Reading for details

Answer the following questions:

  1. How do you understand the title of the passage “Messed up for success”?
Waller-Bridge calls herself a “messed up” person, but that part of her personality is what made her writing and acting good enough for an Emmy.

  1. Why does Waller-Bridge think it wonderful to get the Emmy awards?
Waller-Bridge points out her own personal flaws and then marvels that she was still able to win.

  1. What has led to her success?

Family influence Descended from British nobility, Waller-Bridge was brought up in a free environment. Her mother always told her, “You can be whatever you want if you imagine it.” So Waller-Bridge broke all the rules about what a “good” girl should do.

Being flawed but real:   The character Fleabag is a screw-up who always says or does the wrong thing. This has resonated with the lives of stressed-out women in the real world – doing their best to find balance in their lives.

Her courage and sincerity: “People have been scared to write characters like these. But I think, now, women are so relieved to have this new template. And, aren’t we all a bit of everything?” Waller-Bridge said in an interview.

她坚定地认为努力一定有收获。

She holds a strong belief that hard work will pay off one day.

She acted in the belief that she was doing good.

  1. You can be whatever you want if you imagine it.
  2. So Waller-Bridge broke all the rules about what a “good” girl should do.

Work hard, and see what will comes to you.

  1. Villanelle in Killing Eve (杀死伊芙》), another hit TV series developed by Waller-Bridge, was a little bit violent but showed no interest for the rules others created, which made many people see themselves in her.

“Developed” 为非谓语动词作定语,修饰TV series”,且为被动关系。 “which”引导定语从句,which指代前面整句话,在定语从句中作主语。

这是欧亨利写的短篇小说。
