Running. Because what you need is merely a comfortable pair of sneakers.

II. Skimming

Go through the article quickly and summarize its main idea.

A. To describe the 2019 Beijing Marathon.

B. To reveal the reasons behind the running boom.

C. To encourage people to run for weight loss and fitness.

D. To describe the fun of running.

(Answer: B.)

Read the article carefully and answer the following questions.

III. Detailed reading

2.Why is the UK runner mentioned?

3. What feeling can runners get when racing in marathon?

(Answers:

1.Yes. Only less than 20% of the applicants can take part in the race. It was held on Nov 3. It started at Tian’ anmen Square and ended at the Bird Nest.

2. The UK runner is mentioned as an example to show that although runners motivate themselves with timed goals, it’s not the main reason most people run marathons.

3. Runners can sense childish joy during a marathon.)

IV. Discussion

1. What’s the meaning of the title?

2. “I don’t even know what I was running for – I guess I just felt like it.”

3. Do you have any similar experiences to share?

V. Language focus

1. Find the words in the story that are similar in meaning to running.

(Answers:

chase                        (run, drive, etc. after sb/sth in order to catch them)

2. 1) … the real reason they head out to pound the roads

pound   v. 重击、连击

eg. Some one was pounding at the door.

The cook pounded the meat into the paste.

2) Record times are merely the carrots they dangle in front of themselves.

•I came here just to visit the museum and that's it.

(Answer: Its meaning: something has ended; something is finished or completed; something is all that is needed or wanted.)

Now look at this sentence in the article. What does “done it” refer to? Did the runner actually do it? So what does the whole sentence mean?

New law lets students sleep in (P6)

山东省烟台第二中学 赵娜娜

Lead-in

What time does your school begin classes?  How many hours of sleep do you usually get?

What time do you expect your school to start?

What time do you usually go to sleep?

California is the first state in the US to push back starting hours at middle and high schools.

What’s the main purpose of the article?

To debate whether we should start school later in the day.

To explain to students why they should go to bed earlier.

To introduce California’s new school legislation and its reasons.

Reading for details

Read the article and finish the mind map.

content

A law in California, passed on Oct 13, requires that public middle schools begin classes no earlier than 8:00 am and that high schools start no earlier than 8:30 am, which will go into effect by July 1, 2022.

Further thinking

What do you think of the law? Can you think of any problems it might cause?

It could prevent parents from dropping their kids off at school before work and push extracurricular activities further into the evening.

But according to …, teenagers go through biological changes when they enter puberty, which makes it difficult for them to fall asleep before 11:00 pm.

So when school starts at 8:00 or earlier, they can hardly get the ideal 8.5-9.5 hours of sleep that experts suggest they need to do their best in the daytime.
