Water-scarcity footprints
1. What is a water-scarcity footprint?
•A water-scarcity footprint is a measurement of water consumption and its effect on the local environment. 
2. How is it calculated? 
•First, it counts the liters of water you used. Then, it looks at the place where the water was used. The less water is in your area, the less water you must consume to affect the footprint.

The research 


Water shortage 
1. Only 2.5 percent of Earth’s surface can be used for drinking or farming. 
2. Climate change is one of the causes of water shortages. 
3. In 2018, Cape Town, South Africa, nearly ran out of water due to its growing population.
4. By 2030, a world of about 8.6 billion people will need 50 percent more water, 35 percent more energy, and 40 percent more food. 

IV. Language focus
Paraphrase the following sentences. 
1. It turned out that a sweet tooth not only adds to our waistlines but also stresses our water resources.

Write a short passage about the causes and solutions of water scarcity.
•众所周知,由于全球变暖、环境污染和人口增长,水资源短缺问题越来越严重。是时候行动起来了。
•首先,我们应该发展新技术好好利用现有的水资源,比如海水淡化。第二, 我们必须通过法律禁止水污染。最后,充分利用水资源是每个人的责任。比如,我们可以在日常生活中循环和节约用水。
Possible version 
•As we know, the global water shortage is becoming increasingly severe mainly due to global warming, environmental pollution and the ever-increasing population. Therefore, it’s high time we did something about it.
•Firstly, new methods need to be developed to use the existing water resources, for example, turning sea water into fresh water. Secondly, we must stop water pollution by law. Last but not least, it’s everyone’s responsibility to make good use of water, such as recycling and saving water in our daily life.
