Lead-in
Do you know about the novel Little Women?
The original story centers around the four March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy – during the US Civil War. It was a popular piece in the 19th century as it showed female independence in a time when women were seen but seldom heard.
US author Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel has been loved and inspirational. It’s been the basis for no fewer than eight movies. Have you heard of the latest film adaptation of Little Women? What’s new about this film?

plot
Both Jo and Amy are headstrong and creative. Aiming to be a writer, Jo turns down a marriage proposal from Laurie and seems heady with freedom. Amy, on the other hand, is an ambitious painter with a practical spirit. She feels frustrated by Laurie’s marriage proposal, which comes after his rejection by her sister. But Amy also recognizes that she must marry well to help support her family.
adaptation
In the new movie, Gerwig revives Little Women as a coming-of-age movie and a sibling-rivalry drama. The director re-examines the sisterhood of Jo and Amy, who are romantically triangulated with Laurie, a handsome, rich young man.
non-chronological approach
Rather than beginning with the sisters as girls, the movie starts with the protagonists in their twenties, flashing back to their childhoods.
comments
The two sisters’ similarities – their artistic aspirations and capacity for love – are highlighted, rather than their differences.
-- Radio Times
It adds pointed poignancy to the happy childhoods when they thought that they could do anything. The way the world makes it hard for even gifted and brave women to succeed is one of the points Gerwig is very much making.
