Humans have known of auroras for at least 2,000 years. They have been the subject of many myths. In the early Middle Ages, Scandinavian pirates believed that the aurora was a warrior riding a horse across the sky. In the Arctic, the Inuit believed that the aurora was created by the gods to illuminate a path for the dead.
