What are the most important words for you in 2019? Why? 
The Spring Festival is coming. Do you feel cold this winter? What was the winter like in your childhood? Has the climate changed a lot over the past decade?

1. What are the “words of the year” for 2019? What do they have in common?
The “words of the year” for 2019 are 
“climate emergency”, “climate strike” and “upcycling”  as chosen by the Oxford, Collins and Cambridge dictionaries. 
They were chosen to reflect the ethos of the passing year.

2. What do the “words of the year” mean respectively?
“Climate emergency” means a situation in which urgent action is required to reduce climate change.
 “Climate strike” refers to people leaving work or school as a way to demand action on climate change. 
 “Upcycling” is defined as the activity of making new items out of old or used things to reduce waste.

What do the “words of the year” for 2019 mirror?
The words mirror the heightened public awareness of damage caused by climate change.

How many different media outlets are quoted to show that the public is increasingly aware of the damage caused by climate change? Which media are quoted?
Four classic media are quoted. They are CNN, the Lancet Journal, Time and the New York Times.

To illustrate that climate change is indeed a crisis for ordinary people, which city is cited as an example by Time magazine?
Venice, an Italian city, was cited as an example. Due to climate change, 2019 saw Venice experience its worst flooding in 50 years.


Why does the author think that 2019 may be the turning point?

Have you experienced any unusual trips?

II. While-reading
Making new trails
Read through the text, and try to explain what the title and the three subtitles mean.
Solo travel—travel by yourself, and you are the boss of yourself.
Augmented attractions—travelling by using AR or VR.
Getting off the beaten path—Traveling in less crowded places.

Read through the text and write down the main points of three ways of travel.

Answer: 
1.    You are the boss of everything, choosing wherever you want to go, whatever you’re eager to eat, and whenever you go out. 
2.    It opens up your mind, pushes you out of your comfort zone, makes you more confident and makes you ready to tackle anything.
3.    With ever-improving headsets, smartphones and Wifi connections, you can experience museums, theme parks and historical sites at home.
4.    It costs much less than traditional travel. AR technology offers people more context and information about exhibits.
5.    Take a walk, ride a bike, sip coffee a little slower, take a deep breath and explore some less famous places.
6.    It is much less crowded, which lets people slow down and notice the little things.
