Inspired by Kobe
Part 1
1. Although Kobe Bryant is no longer with us, his unbreakable will on and off the basketball court lives on. This month, it was announced that the late superstar would be inducted (入选) into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, a prestigious honor for basketball’s best. Alongside Bryant, eight others will be inducted at a ceremony on Aug 29.
2. “His fierce competitiveness, work ethic and drive were unmatched,” Jeanie Buss, owner of the Los Angles Lakes, told ESPN. “Those qualities helped Bryant lead us to five titles—and have now brought him to the Hall of Fame, where he will be enshrined (铭记) with the greatest to have ever played the game. No one deserves it more.”
3. Indeed, what elevated Bryant above his peers was his unmatchable commitment to be the best. He was ruthless (冷酷的) in his pursuit to dominate his opponents. He called it the “mamba mentality” after the black mamba, one of the world’s deadliest snakes—and also after the top killer from the 2003 movie Kill Bill, according to The New Yorker.
Keywords:
Ruthless: hard and cruel; merciless
Dominant: having absolute power or control the other person
Prestigious: respected and admired as very important, e.g. prestigious universities or schools
Work ethic: treating your work seriously and responsibly; working hard
Drive: motivation
Title: championship
Part 2
4. The mamba mentality became so popular that Bryant detailed his process in his book The Mamba Mentality: How I Play. In it, he revealed his famously detailed approach as well as his physical and mental preparation to not just succeed at the game, but to excel.
5. “Mamba mentality is all about focusing on the process and trusting in the hard work when it matters most,” he wrote in the book. “It’s the ultimate mantra (准则) for the competitive spirit. It started just as a hashtag that came to me one day, and it’s grown into something athletes—and even non-athletes—embrace as a mindset.”
6. Bryant took after one of basketball’s most legendary players, Michael Jordan, not only with regard to Jordan’s playing style, but his competitive nature.
7. “I liked challenging people and making them uncomfortable,” Bryant wrote in an excerpt published on the Players’ Tribune. “That’s what leads to introspection (内省) and that’s what leads to improvement. You could say I dared people to be their best selves.”
8. Though many were shocked and sad when the Los Angles great died in a helicopter crash in January, all signs point to Bryant’s legacy persisting for generations to come. Whether you’re a basketball player or not, you can’t deny the Kobe’s power to inspire you to be your best self.
Questions:
1. What did Kobe say about mamba mentality?
2. Why does the passage mention Michael Jordan in Para. 6?

Lead in-the wrong enemy
You may know about the measures that many western countries are adopting to cope with the COVID-19.
e.g.  UK:
handwashing and respiratory hygiene, such as covering your nose and mouth when sneezing
slogan “Stay at home. Protect the NHS. Save lives.”
You may also be familiar with the phrase “social distancing”. Which of the measures here is about social distancing?

Let’s watch a video of a girl in New York, showing her daily routine under lockdown.  See if you find her life familiar.
Questions:
How does the video make you feel? Is she doing a good job, making routines, following social distancing guidelines and remaining optimistic?

Questions for the first part:
Why did the US president decide to halt funding for WHO?
2. Why does the author mention the science journal Nature in the first two paragraphs?
Part 1
The virus knows no borders, and the pandemic distinguishes no races. As countries struggle to control the spread of the virus, a minority of politicians are “sticking with the outdated script (脚本)”, noted Nature, one of the world’s top scientific journals.
On April 7, Nature published an article named Stop the Coronavirus Stigma (污名) Now and apologized for associating the virus with Wuhan and China in their news coverage. However, the calling hasn’t been listened to by all.
The same day, US President Donald Trump blamed the World Health Organization (WHO) for getting “every aspect” of the novel coronavirus pandemic wrong and on April 14, Trump announced the US is halting funding for the organization.
He said the WHO “missed the call” and implied it knew about the dangers of the coronavirus months before taking any action. He also accused the organization of being “China-centric”.
Key word and sentence understanding
Imply: to suggest that something is true, without saying this directly
The first sentence: “The virus knows no borders, and the pandemic distinguishes no races.”
Any person in any country can get it, regardless of his/her race, background, social status, etc. This is a virus that can hurt all, and thus requires the efforts of all.
Reading task for the second part
Pay attention to Trump’s response to the pandemic and the WHO’s response to the pandemic.

6. According to the Guardian, the US president has repeatedly denied responsibility and sought to blame China, the Obama administration, the media and now the WHO.
7. In fact, the WHO first noted “pneumonia of unknown cause” in Wuhan in late December. It declared a global health emergency on Jan 30 and on March 11 declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.
8. CNBC pointed out that the WHO’s global emergency declaration on Jan 30 was nearly a month before Trump tweeted that “the coronavirus is very much under control in the USA”, and six weeks before he declared a national emergency on March 13.
9. On April 8, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus criticized the US for politicizing the pandemic. “We don’t do politics at the WHO,” he said. “We care for the poor. We care for those who are vulnerable (弱势的).”
Key word
Vulnerable: someone who is vulnerable can be easily harmed or hurt.
Why did Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus criticize the US?
The US didn’t take timely measures to prevent the virus.
The US ignored the global emergency declaration.
The American president tweeted false information about the situation.
The American president blamed the outbreak on other countries and organizations.
Questions for the third part
What is the main idea of the last part?
Why does the passage quote the UN Secretary-General’s words?
Part 3
10. According to Xinhua, the WHO has published 50 pieces of technical guidance providing evidence-based advice on every element of the response. By April 8, the WHO had shipped more than 2 million items of personal protective equipment to 133 countries and regions and is preparing to ship another 2 million items in the coming weeks. Since February, it has brought more than 400 of the world’s leading researchers together to identify research priorities and accelerate (加快) research.
12. The WHO’s important role has been recognized and commended by the international community.
13. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres lent his support too. “Now is the time for unity, for the international community to work together in solidarity (团结) to stop this virus and its shattering consequences,” he said.
