What is the main idea of the article?
   The solution to address the water pollution has been found: oysters. The oyster population is beginning to make a comeback, which could have a positive impact on the river. Oysters act as filters and can clean up to 50 gallons of water each day.

1. How does the author find the solution to the heavily contaminated water in NYC?
   The solution was discovered by the author while participating in the two-week Institute for Environmental Journalism Summer Program.

    The oyster population could have a positive impact on the river. Oysters act as filters and can clean up to 50 gallons of water each day.

   The canal is contaminated with sewage, heavy metals and pesticides. Each time it rains, contaminants that flow into the canal would exceed what the oysters could cope with and filter.

4. What do the organizations do to better help educate the public?
   They are hosting canoe trips and inviting people in the community to come and see the oysters living in the canal. The more the city sees people using the canal, the more likely it may be to fund the oyster program.
