The world’s most trafficked non-human mammal
Tens of thousands of pangolins are poached every year, killed for their scales for use in traditional Chinese medicine and for their meat, a delicacy among some ultra-wealthy in China and Vietnam.

•1. What’s the function of pangolins’ scales?
•1). They serve as the only armor of pangolins: When in danger, pangolins can curl up, and even lions can’t bite through their hard scales.
•2). In traditional Chinese medicine, pangolin scales used to be believed to have health benefits – such as improving blood circulation and reducing inflammation.
•2. Why were pangolin scales removed from the list of approved ingredients used in traditional medicine?
•1). China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration upgraded pangolins to a first-level protected wild animal.
•2). Modern medicine has found that pangolin scales are made of keratin – the same material found in our fingernails. And according to People’s Daily, their so-called health benefits – if there are any – can also be achieved by pig nails.

What can we do?

• The picture shows hunters aiming guns at wild animals. It shows that human beings put animals at risk. What the picture shows is really impressive.
• When we think about the issue of animal endangerment, we have to consider why it exists almost everywhere in the world. First of all, many people consider certain kinds of wildlife to be of great value. This encourages people to hunt those animals. Secondly, some places do not have enough laws protecting animals, and laws that do exist may not have punishments that are strict enough. Moreover, people do not know clearly about what kinds of animals are protected, thus some of them are killed by mistake.
• So, it’s high time for us to take action to protect these wild animals. While governments are making more powerful laws against to protect animals, ordinary people should also raise the awareness of this issue. For example, some people refuse to purchase products made from animal fur, particularly the fur from endangered animals. Remember, we can’t live without other creatures. So saving animals means saving ourselves.
