Unwrapping ancient mysteries (P6)
河北师大附中  赵乃平

Lead-in
What do you know about mummies?
The heart was left in the body because it was considered to be the center of intelligence. The brain was thrown away because it was thought to be useless.
Sometimes the mummy‘s mouth would be opened to symbolize breathing in the afterlife. It is probably this custom that led to the superstition (迷信) that mummies come back to life.
Mummies are studied by scientists without unwrapping them by using CAT scan and X-Ray machines.

What is VR (virtual reality, 虚拟现实)?
Virtual reality is an environment that is produced by a computer and seems very much like reality to the person experiencing it.

What can VR be used for?

Detail reading
What is the text mainly about?
A. What kind of life ancient Egyptians led.
B. How Egyptian mummies were discovered.
C. How researchers studied Egyptian animal mummies.

Why did ancient Egyptians mummify human bodies?
They believed in life after death and that the soul would return to the body. Preservation of the body was an important part of this.

Why were animals also mummified?
To accompany the dead;
To serve as a sacrifice to gods.

What technology did the researchers use to study the mummified animals?
They used X-ray micro CT scanning to digitally unwrap and dissect the mummified animals.

How does the micro CT work?
It takes thousands of individual X-rays from all angles. Then the 3D scans are printed or placed into virtual reality.

What did the researchers find from the cat mummy?
What is the evidence?
The cat was strangled to death when it was less than five months old.
The cat's age is proven by scans that show there are teeth that have not grown out.

What caused the death of the snake, according to the scientists?
It died of a whipping action.

Conclusion
With the help of __________   ________,
the secrets in the “time capsules”  are revealed.
