August 7, 1782 - George Washington ordered the creation of the Badge of Military Merit to honor soldiers wounded in battle.
The award was only given to non-commissioned officers and privates. It was later succeeded by the Purple Heart.
The Purple Heart (紫心勋章) is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the president to those wounded or killed while serving, on or after April 5, 1917, with the US military.
