What do you know about the Forbidden City?
Lying at the center of Beijing, it was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Rectangular in shape, it is the world’s largest palace complex. It was built in 1420. This year marks its 600th anniversary. That is to say, it will celebrate the 600th anniversary of its completion this year.

Ziwei Star was  the abode（天体） of the Celestial Emperor. It was the realm（范围） of the Celestial Emperor and his family.
No one could enter or leave the palace without the emperor’s permission.
It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.

Q1. What is the largest palace in the Forbidden City? How large is it?
The Hall of Supreme Harmony (Taihe Dian) is the largest palace in the Forbidden City. It is as large as five and a half basketball courts and
as high as a 12-floor building.

Q2. Please describe the ornaments of Taihe Dian.
It has the most deified creatures (神兽) as ornaments (装饰物) on the roofs. This is also a sign of its importance since more roof ornaments (装饰) are a sign of the building’s rank.

The three main buildings in the front court are:
the Hall of Supreme Harmony （太和殿）,
the Hall of Complete Harmony（中和殿），
the Hall of Preserving Harmony（保和殿）.

The Hall of Supreme Harmony 太和殿
   It is the most important building in the Forbidden City.
   It was the place where grand ceremonies were held, such as the emperor’s enthronement ceremony and the emperor’s wedding ceremony.

The Hall of Complete Harmony 中和殿
It is a square-shaped hall for the emperor to take a short rest before he went to the Hall of Supreme Harmony for grand ceremonies.

The Preserving Harmony 保和殿
This is where the emperor rested and changed clothes before departing for such important rites as selecting the empress or crown prince.

According to experts, the traditional “dougong (斗拱)” and “sunmao (榫卯)” structures in the Forbidden City’s buildings are like shock absorbers  in cars with good buffer (缓冲) effect.
