An ancient art to ‘dye’ for (P5)
I. Pre-reading ·Have you ever seen this kind of color and pattern on clothes? ·It is made through an ancient Chinese dyeing skill – tie-dye (扎染).
Think before reading ·When was the skill created? ·What dye (染料) did ancient people use to do tie-dye? ·How has the skill changed over time?
Tie-dye 扎染 ★ Level: National intangible cultural heritage (国家级非物质文化遗产) ★ Year of selection: 2006 ★ Location: Yunnan ★ Special for: Beautiful and unique patterns (独特的图案)
II. While reading ·What can we learn from this paragraph? Tie-dye was a way for ancient people to make colorful clothes.
·When was tie-dye created? More than 1,000 years ago.
·Who created the skill? Bai ethnic group (白族) in Yunnan
·When did tie-dye become popular in China? During the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties
·How do people do tie-dye? They tie, sew, or clip cloth together and then put it in dye.
Plant - Isatidis was often used.
·What does tie-dyed cloth look like? It has unique patterns and the color is irregular (不规则的).
·What do people in the US think about tie-dye? They also like it.
·What does the last paragraph tell us? The tie-dye trend has never really gone away.
III. Post reading After reading the story, you may find that tie-dye is pretty easy to do yourself. Group work: Please organize a tie-dye activity in your class. Write down tips for doing tie-dye, such as what you should prepare and how you can tie or clip your clothes.
Tie-dye originated in China and is done by people all over the world. Group work: Do you know any other ancient skills like tie-dye? Please describe them to your classmates and teacher. |
