To stop the novel coronavirus, some countries have banned (禁止) grain exports . Some people worry that this might affect the international food supply chain (供应链), the Paper reported.      On March 25, Vietnam, the world’s third-largest rice exporter, banned rice exports. The country mainly exports rice to the Philippines, China and several African countries. Similarly, countries such as Cambodia, Kazakhstan and Russia have also banned exports of certain agricultural (农业的) products.

However, there is no need for China to worry, as it already has enough grain. According to Wei Baigang, an official from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, China’s food grain output has hit more than 600 million tons for five consecutive (连续的) years since 2014. Record agricultural harvests have been recorded for 15 consecutive years.

China relies (依赖) mainly on domestic (国内的) grain production and only 2 percent of the nation’s grain is imported (进口). The global price increase has had a very limited influence on China’s food prices, Wei said. “Therefore, both the amount and price of food are stable (稳定的) and there is no need to stockpile it,” he said at a news conference on April 4. But for less developed countries, increasing prices might make society unstable and even cause hunger, the Paper noted.

III. Further reading

April 22 is Earth Day. Everyone on Earth should care about and protect the planet.       Each has warmed by about 1 degree Fahrenheit (华氏度) over the past 100 years, but why and how? Well, scientists are not quite sure. Maybe Earth has warmed on its own. But most scientists say human activity is warming Earth.

The greenhouse effect (温室效应) has caused Earth to get warmer. Human activity causes too much carbon dioxide to build up in the atmosphere. This makes Earth warmer.A warming Earth results in climate (气候) change. This means it is sometimes too hot or too cold, which can change the weather and make it worse. Floods, droughts, and other natural disasters become more common. Climate change itself can also cause Earth to warm up even more.

When Earth warms, there will be more rain and sea levels will rise due to the melting of polar glaciers. This can affect all of Earth’s animals, plants and even people. On one island in the Pacific Ocean, 100 people had to move to higher ground because the sea rose around their island. People can no longer live on the coast. Scientists say that the seas could rise by nearly one meter by 2100

However, there are things we can do to help the planet. We can recycle our waste. We can use electric appliances less often. We can remind our friends, family, and even strangers to protect Earth.

Read the passage and fill in the blanks.

1. Earth Day is a reminder for people to take better care of Earth.

2. The greenhouse effect is caused by human activity.

3. According to the passage, Earth’s climate and temperature can affect each other.

4. People can affect Earth's air, land and water.

IV. Post reading

Please design a poster to remind people to save the environment.
