III. Further reading

Read the passage and answer the questions.

People already know a lot about animals. However, there are still some things about animals that may surprise you. Here are some facts about animals you probably didn’t know.           Cows have best friends and feel stressed when they are separated. Scientists have found that cows are very social animals and will always make friends with other cows. When a cow is with its friends, it feels more relaxed compared with when it is alone.

During breeding (繁殖) season, a male (雄性的) penguin (企鹅) will offer a small stone to a female (雌性的) penguin as a gift. If she takes it, they will become partners. When the female penguin lays (下蛋) an egg, she and her partner might carry it on their feet because some penguins don’t build nests (鸟巢).

Crocodiles (鳄鱼) swallow () stones. Crocodiles always swallow their food whole instead of chewing it like other animals. The stones they swallow break the food into very small pieces in their stomachs. These stones may stay in their stomachs for their entire lives.

Elephants use plants to treat pain or other illness. Scientists once found a pregnant (怀孕的) elephant in Africa who ate a kind of plant that was not part of her normal diet. Four days later, she gave birth to a baby elephant. The same plant was used by local pregnant women.

·How does the cow feel when it is with friends?

  It feels relaxed.

·What do male penguins offer as a gift?

  A small stone.

·Crocodiles like eating stones. (F)

·The stones may stay in crocodiles’ stomachs for their entire lives. (T)

·What do elephants use to treat pain or illness?

  They use plants.

1. Cows hate making friends with other cows. (F)

2. All male penguins will build nests if their female partners lay eggs. (F)

3. Crocodiles swallow stones to help with digestion. (T)

4. Elephants eat plants only when they are hungry. (F)

5. The passage mainly tells us some surprising facts about animals. (T)

IV. Post reading

Group activity - Design a poster and write a report about how different culture view different animals. Do they view them positively or negatively?

New tech will change our future (P6)

I. Pre-reading

·What new technologies will the story be about?

II. While reading

·Everything in the universe has gravity. (T)

·Quantum sensors can find tiny gravitational fields and detect things more accurately and safely.

·Why are quantum sensors more accurate than other sensors?

Because they can notice changes at the atomic level.

·What can quantum sensors do?

  1. They can detect cables underground without digging for them.

  2. They can detect earthquakes before they happen.

  3. They can keep track of someone’s brain activity.

·What is “in-silico medicine” ?

It can test medicine and treatment methods on virtual organs or even full bodies produced by computers.

·What are the advantages of using virtual patients?

People can test new drugs and treatments more cheaply and without risking anyone’s life.

·What do we usually use to produce hydrogen?

We use fossil fuels to produce hydrogen.

·How has technology made it cleaner to produce hydrogen?

We have more efficient machines now that can produce hydrogen from water.

Choose the answer:

1. With in-silico medicine, _____.

A. we can test new drugs on virtual patients

B. we won’t need human doctors in the future

C. we can treat patients in a virtual environment

D. we can replace human organs with virtual ones

2. Quantum sensors are more accurate than other sensors because _____.

A. they can be used to detect earthquakes

B. they can detect pipes or cables underground

C. they can sense gravity, while others cannot

D. they can notice changes at the atomic level

3. Hydrogen wasn’t widely used as fuel before, because _____.

a. burning hydrogen wastes a lot of water

b. we need fossil fuels to produce hydrogen

c. splitting hydrogen from water uses too much electricity

d. the by-product of burning hydrogen causes pollution

A. ab           B. bc      C. cd       D. ad

4. Compared to the past, how has hydrogen production changed?

A. Hydrogen can be used in many high-tech fields.

B. It can help us use fossil fuels in a cleaner way.

C. We can produce hydrogen more efficiently.

D. It will take the place of fossil fuels.

Read the sentences and mark them true (T) or false (F).

1. New technology can improve our lives. (T)

2. Quantum sensors can detect earthquakes while they are happening. (F)

3. Computers and robots might one day take the place of human doctors. (T)

4. Producing hydrogen is bad for the environment. (F)

III. Further reading

Want a glance of the future of healthcare? Take a look at the way various patient care networks are being connected to one another and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient —no matter where he or she may be.

Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms(症状) are the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis (远程诊断) will be based on real physiological data (生理数据) from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that personal data assistants and mobile phones can be used to accurately diagnose a patient remotely. With this kind of technology, in-person doctor visits could become a thing of the past.

Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural areas where doctors are harder to find. Telemedicine could also be used to provide immediate care in case of emergencies, such as after an earthquake. The overall trend is moving toward providing global access to medical data and experts’ opinions.

But there is one problem. Bandwidth (宽带) is the limiting factor for sending complex (复杂的) medical pictures around the world — CT images being one of the biggest bandwidth users. Communication satellites may be able to deal with (处理) short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking toward both the second-generation internet and third-generation mobile phones for the future of remote medical services.

Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communication, new technology could make telemedicine more efficient, common, and practical.

1. What is the article mainly about?

  The use of telemedicine.

2. What will doctors use for remote diagnosis?

Personal data assistants and mobile phones.

3. What is the “problem” in the fourth paragraph?

Sending and receiving high-quality medical images requires a lot of bandwidth.

IV. Post reading

Write a short passage about how technology has changed your life.
