Cleaning up seafood industry with fishless fish (P4)
山东省烟台第二中学 赵霞

Lead in
Do you like seafood? Why or why not?

What do think of the taste of seafood?
Delicious and tasty!

Do you know where the seafood comes from?
From the sea.

Have you ever thought about the negative effects of the seafood industry?
Read for main idea
Let’s read the passage and figure out what it talks about.

The fishing industry leaves behind a series of human rights and environmental disasters, full of human exploitation and irresponsible practices, on the high seas. For this reason, businesses and consumers are looking to an alternative food source that tastes like seafood without being from the sea.
Read for the detailed information
How do they produce such plant-based seafood?

Good Catch uses many legumes, including peas, lentils and soybeans, mixed with algal oil and seafood powder for their fish-free tuna product. Van Cleve Seafood offers crab cakes made from cabbage, artichoke and hearts of palm.

Fill in the blanks.

The fishing industry's human rights and environmental abuse is abundant. Many fishing boats are operated by migrants who are abused and forced to work long hours in terrible conditions. There's also the environmental issue of bycatch, the unintentional catching and killing of animals. Bycatch makes up about 40 percent of the fishing industry’s combined haul, 28.5 billion kilograms per year, according to Oceana, a nonprofit ocean conservation organization.
