III. Further reading

Read the passage and fill in the blanks.

Are you tired of lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, wishing sleep would come? Try these lab-tested tips.

Step 1: Time your workouts

Get some exercise during the day. People who are physically active fall asleep faster and sleep better overall, as long as they don't exert themselves within three hours of bedtime.

Step 2: Get off the cell phone

Turn off your cell phone at least an hour before going to bed. One study indicated that being exposed(暴露) to cell phone radiation(辐射) before going to bed may compromise (影响)sleep quality.

Step 3: Get a whiff of this(使用香薰)

Put a few drops of vanilla(香草的) oil on a tissue(纸巾) and tuck it inside your pillowcase. Studies have indicated the scent may help people nod off faster than they normally would, and get them into the REM, or dream state, more quickly. The scent of lavender(薰衣草) may help people fall asleep, too.

Step 4: Picture this

Imagine a scene(场景) that is pleasant and soothing to you. This may help you relax enough to fall asleep.

Step 5: Take a pill

Still not asleep? Take a tablet of melatonin(褪黑素), an over-the-counter(非处方药) hormone that promotes sleep. It proved effective (有效) in a study of nurses who took it to deal with the sleep problems brought on by shift work.(轮班工作)

Step 6: Don't force it

If nothing is working, get out of bed, keep the lights dim(昏暗的), and do something -- as long as it doesn‘t involve turning on an electronic device, which will only stimulate(刺激) your further. Return to bed when you feel drowsy (sleepy). Sleep is as essential as (和一样必要)food: humans die about as quickly from food deprivation(缺少食物) as sleep deprivation.

be tired of doing 厌倦做某事

turn off 关闭,关掉

REMrapid eye movement 快速眼部运动

nod off 瞌睡

a tablet of 一片

deal with 处理

Answer the questions:

1. How many tips does the passage mention?

  Six.

2. Which tip might work best for you? Why?

I think … is suitable for me.

If I…, I can fall asleep more easily.

IV. Post reading

Group activity - Design a poster and write a report to call on people to get more sleep.

Artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能) is growing rapidly. We are living in a world that depends more and more on AI. AI is a group of technologies that help machines get, understand, and use information to do tasks.

Recent developments in AI have gotten a lot of attention from society. Some people have welcomed AI because it makes things possible. For example, AI will have a great influence on areas like medicine and engineering. But this attention has also produced a lot of fear. Many workers are worrying that AI could cause them to lose their jobs.                                                                      According to a recent study, nearly five percent of jobs will disappear because of AI. In some industries, AI is already doing the work that people used to do, such as assembling (装配) cars, digging coal, and lifting goods. Self-driving cars and trucks controlled (控制)by AI will also take away drivers’ jobs in the future.

On the other hand, AI will also create many new jobs for people. More people will be needed to write programs for AI systems (系统). People will also be needed to set up and repair AI systems. Meanwhile, jobs that require good communication skills and emotional sensitivity with people will not be replaced (取代) by AI. These include jobs in fields like teaching, nursing, and personal training.    AI is here. It is changing how people live and work in many ways. That makes AI important to watch - not to fear(害怕).
