1. How are dogs honored nowadays?
•On April 25, Turkmenistan celebrated its first state holiday honoring the native Alabay dog breed.
•While this year marked the first official national celebration of the breed, last year the president unveiled a 15-meter golden statue of the dog in the capital, Ashgabat.
•On the second day of Kukur Tihar, a five-day Hindu festival held in late autumn in Nepal, people place flower garlands around dogs to show respect.
2. How did man develop a special bond with dogs?
•Dogs diverged from an extinct wolf species some 15,000 to 40,000 years ago.
•What followed was the domestication of dogs. Since then, dogs have helped their human companions track prey as well as prevent them from becoming prey.
•During the Agricultural Revolution, specialist dogs emerged. These dogs took on more tasks.
•The first large-scale civilizations were established around 4,000 BC, by which point, wherever humans went, dogs went too.
•Dogs began to be bred and traded for use in battle.
•Today, dogs continue to be companions, offering comfort and protection to their owners. But they are also highly important in other areas.
