Winds halt train lines (P6)
山东省烟台第二中学 赵娜娜
Lead-in
Do you think wind can stop a train?
Strong wind can affect high-speed trains.
On May 1, strong gales in Baoding, Hebei province, caused a foreign object to be caught in high-speed rail overhead lines, leading to the delay of trains. Some passengers were even stuck on their trains mid-travel.
Title prediction
Winds halt train lines
What is the meaning of “halt”?
How can winds halt train lines?
How can we solve the problem?
Read for main idea
Foreign objects caught in high-speed rail overhead lines because of strong wind can pose a threat to the electricity supply of high-speed trains, leading to the delay of trains.
Read for structure

Read for details
Read the text carefully and answer the following questions.

1. What are rail overhead lines used for?
As an important part of the power source for high-speed trains, overhead wires are strung along the overhead lines to provide electricity to high-speed trains.

2. Why are rail overhead lines vulnerable to wind damage?

3. How can the problem be solved?
Remove foreign objects from overhead lines manually
Make fake nests and put them along the railway to trick birds into thinking the place is taken
Post-reading
Is there any other solution to the problem?
Kites, balloons and Kongming lanterns should be forbidden within 500 meters of the railway.
Raise awareness of the issue, especially among those who live near the railways.
More windbreaks (防风墙) should be built where necessary.
More wind-proof tunnels should be built in highly windy areas.
Language study
1.On May 1, strong gales in Baoding, Hebei province, caused a foreign object to be caught in high-speed rail overhead lines, leading to the delay of trains. Some passengers were even stuck on their trains mid-travel.
2.These foreign objects are extremely dynamic and difficult to control.
3. If one end of the kite wire touches the power supply line and the other end touches the ground, it will cause a short circuit on the overhead lines, causing a loss of power.
4. Other conductive materials, such as tin foil and iron sheets, could also pose a threat.
5. To make fake nests and put them along the railway to trick birds into thinking the place is taken.
Homework
Based on the passage, write a passage to call on everyone to protect the railways.
