One of the oldest species of bird on Earth, crested ibises, have come back from the brink of extinction
because of different protective approaches adopted by government.


While-reading:Read the text and answer the questions
1. Why did crested ibises begin to disappear in the 1960s?
Due to pollution and other human activities, the birds began to disappear in the 1960s.
2. What measures were taken to protect crested ibises right after their discovery?
The local government prohibited hunting, cutting down trees, setting off explosives in the mountains, or using fertilizers (肥料) in the birds’foraging (觅食) areas.
3. What did guardians at the Qingling No 1 protection station do to guard the birds?
The guardians worked day and night. In the daytime, they observed and recorded the birds’ habits and characteristics; at night, the main job was to keep them safe.
4. What achievements have been made due to these measures?
The crested ibises have come back from the brink of extinction.
The number has risen to more than 7,000 worldwide.
There are 5,000 crested ibises in Shannxi alone.
