III. Further reading

Read the passage and fill in the blanks.

·Significance of fathers in our lives

Fathers are traditionally seen as providers and guides for their children. However, this scenario (预测) has significantly changed in today’s nuclear families. With both parents working in most families, fathers are getting just as involved in child-rearing (抚养) as mothers are.

Today, most fathers do not shy away from changing diapers (尿布) or putting their children to sleep. This cultural change is strengthening father-child relationships and consequently (因此) improving their children’s emotional development and building stronger family bonds (纽带).

·Significance of Father's Day

Father's Day gives us the opportunity to express thanks to our fathers for their love and affection. Observing Father's Day makes fathers feel that their contributions are acknowledged (承认) by not only their children, but society as a whole. They feel proud to be fathers.

By celebrating Father's Day, children learn to appreciate their fathers. It is easy to take the love of one’s parents for granted. Celebrating Father's Day leads them to ponder (沉思) the important role their fathers play in their life. This helps them appreciate the selfless care and protection provided by their fathers and bring them closer to their dads.

Fill in the blanks.

1. This cultural change is strengthening father-child relationships.

2. Father's Day gives us the opportunity to express thanks to our fathers.

IV. Post reading

Think about the role your father plays in your family and write a thank-you letter or card to him to show your appreciation.

·“survive” means ___.

  A. stay awake

  B. avoid dying

  C. do an experiment

  D. get rid of stress

  由上文可知,在太空生存是很艰难的,所以新实验的目的是帮助人们更了解如何在太空生存下来。

·What are the animals that will be taking part in the experiments? How many of them are there?

They are 5,000 tardigrades, or “water bears” , as well as 128 squid.

·Why were tardigrades sent into space?

Because they can survive in extreme environments.

·What can we learn from tardigrades, according to Thomas Boothby?

We can learn how they survive and use this knowledge to keep astronauts safe.

·What is the aim of studying the squid?

3. Tardigrades have digestive and immune systems that are similar to humans. (F)

III. Further reading

Do we need to explore space?

Man has been fascinated by outer space for thousands of years. It has been almost over 40 years since we first landed on the moon.

Some people believe that space exploration is a waste of time and money. They point out that it costs billions of dollars to do space research. However, this research doesn’t always result in useful data. If we calculate (计算) the time and money spent on this research, it doesn’t seem to be worth it.

However, there are many people who believe that space exploration has plenty of advantages. Many of the things we use on Earth, such as weather satellites, air purifiers and LED lights, were invented by researchers at our space programs. They have benefited people all over the world.

We have learned much about space over the years. This knowledge has plenty of value on its own, as it tells us about the history of the universe. We have learned how old our planet is and where it might’ve come from. We’ve learned that other planets in the universe might have conditions to support life. Space exploration has also brought us together in a unique way, as many nations work together to explore the stars.

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of space exploration?

2. How would you answer the question in the title?

IV. Post reading

Would you like to experiment with animals in space? Which animal would you choose? Do some research online and pick one.
