Discussion: Can you imagine what a world without insects would be like?
Would it be good to live without flies and bugs annoying us? Why or why not?
II. while reading Read the text and answer the following questions.
1. What has happened to insects in the past decades according to British biologist Dave Goulson? The number of insects has dropped by more than half.
2. What do researchers believe have been the main causes of the decline of insects? They believe intensive agriculture, the use of pesticides, urbanization and climate change are significant factors that contribute to the decline of insects.
3. What consequences will the extinction of insects bring to the planet and human beings according to Francisco Sanchez-Bayo? If insect species losses cannot be halted, this will have catastrophic consequences for both the planet’s ecosystems and for the survival of mankind.
4. What does Goulson believe is key to preventing insect species losses? Goulson believes the first step is to raise public awareness of natural protection and the place to start is with our children, encouraging environmental awareness from an early age.
